Get Moving!

For those of you who have been procrastinating when it comes to working out, there’s no better time to start than now! With summer in full-swing, there are so many outdoor options for exercising. I know that many of us BGs put off working out to preserve our ‘dos, but our health should always come first. Doing at least 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a week will keep those pesky pounds away and our hearts healthy.

What’s your favorite work-out routine? Do you prefer bike riding, jogging, swimming, etc? For those BGs with relaxed tresses, do you oftentimes forgo working out in an effort to keep your lovely locks straight?

I workout 4-5 times a week. I wear a relaxer and am currently rockin a swing bob which ends at my shoulders in the front. I normally put it in a loose ponytail to workout; once home I curl and wrap it so that it’s fresh in the morning. I also go to the salon every other week and try to go once a week in the summer (I live in TX). I would like to switch my workout to the morning so if anyone has suggestions on how I can do that and still be able to keep my do cute for work (regular 8-5), I would love some suggestions!!!!!!

  3. I work out on the elliptical 5-6 days a week.

Sometimes my hair holds up, sometimes it doesn’t.

For me it will be biking but since I have an injury I been swimming and I must say it’s very calm and relax. I’m not a good swimmer at all but being in the pool and seeing the blue water is soothing.

  5. I recently begun working out. My hair is short so it really doesn’t bother me. I workout 4-5 days a week.

  6. Yes, Ihave to get on the ball with exercise.
    Congrats CC.

  7. Great post and right on time. I was just about to fall off the wagon, but this is a great reminder. I think I’ll do a class tonight.

My favorite workouts are yoga, pilates, step classes and dance classes or the eliptical machines. I rarely do any weights or traditional stregnth training and I walk A LOT, either commuting or along the lakefront in Chicago in the mornings.

    Again, fab post.

  8. I like Zumba, walking, and elliptical. I tend to work out first thing in the morning. I don’t have a relaxer so it takes a bit of a toll on my hair. Any tips?

    xo,
    CC
P.S. Thanks for the cucumber prize I am excited!

  9. I am a fast walker. I love walking, especially in senic areas. I try to work out 3 to 4 day a week, alternating between cardio and strength training. I have natural tresses that are currently in braids right now so I don’t have anything to worry about in that regard.

I realize that we black women invest a lot of time and money in our hair, but since when did maintaining a hair style come before maintaining our health? How did hair become a bigger priority?

  10. Thanks for the motivation BG!

  11. Zumba is fun. I also enjoy yoga, cardio and weight lifting. I want to take kickboxing or a hip hop dance class as well. I have relaxed hair and I usually just wrap it or put it in a ponytail while working out.

i jog for 20min everyday and play b-ball on the weekend.

  13. I like to walk on the treadmill for about 30 mins. on like a slight jog/almost run. Then I get off and do 100 sit-ups and a 2, 12 sets of squats. Sometimes I run on the treadmill with weights in my hands to tone my arms. I don’t ever pass up working out for my hair I might do it for other things, but I don’t usually worry about my hair. I’ll wrap it or put it in a pony tail.

  14. I always make plans to work out but for some reason I never get to actually do it. O well, maybe tomorrow

Joined the gym 3 weeks ago to back on into an exercise routine. Aim for 3x/week, Pilates, dance or WebRx class. I also walk a lot around the city. My hair is natural, so that’s not an issue. When I get that rare blow-out, I forgo the gym for the week. I wonder how those with relaxed hair maintain it after working out since it gets sweaty. Do you wash it and do it yourself at home? How do you prevent it from getting smelly? – V in NYC

  16. I love Zumba; I do it 3 times a week. Along with 1 day of Yoga and on my Zumba days, I try to do some strength training before class…so i get a total body workout 3 times a week.

I have relaxed hair…so I normally wear a ponytail or I will wrap it up while working out. Due to all the sweating, I have to wash my hair weekly which is a hassle. My health is first though, so I deal with it!

I joined a gym two weeks ago. Suprisingly, I exercise six days a week. My hair is relaxed but I decided nearly a week ago to wear kinky twist extentions so that way I can trim my body and worry less about using my chi-iron all the time. I enjoy kickboxing and water exercises.

  18. Hey you guys, what is Zumba? Several of you mentioned it, but I’ve never heard of it. I guess I should head to Google! lol
