The Dress Your Daughter Will Adore this Holiday Season

Nothing makes my daughter’s face light up more than a pretty dress.

Ever since she could talk, she’s proudly expressed her preference for ultra girly garments. If she could wear a frilly dress every day, she would—and let me tell you, she’s tried.

Having a daughter who loves playing dress up on a random Wednesday, I have to bring my A-game when it comes to finding dresses for special occasions, especially the holidays.

This year, I’ve outdone myself. When she saw her brand new Strasburg Children’s dress, she nearly fell to the floor with excitement. To say she was overjoyed would be an understatement. Who could blame her?

Ava-Strasburg

Ava is wearing the “Ivy” Smocked Christmas dress available here, $112.

The gorgeous handcrafted “Ivy” frock is a dress of little girls’ dreams. Made in America with 100 percent cotton, the smock-style dress is stitched with an eye-catching chevron pattern and beautiful rosebud embroidery that’s perfect for Christmas. The red satin ribbons adorned at the bottom of the puff sleeves add a dainty, yet elegant touch that my daughter absolutely loves. Plus, the sash in the back ties the entire look together, literally.

The dress’ classic design stands out from contemporary, run-of-the mill children’s frocks found in department stores, making it even more charming and undeniably unique. While it’s ideal for the holidays, it can be repurposed for Valentine’s Day or even a winter wedding.

Ava-Strasburg-2

If you know a little girl who prefers a pretty dress over the hottest toys or latest gadgets like my daughter, give her the gift that she’ll cherish: a stunning Strasburg Children’s dress. Trust me, you’ll be showered in kisses and inundated with countless twirls after presenting this timeless ensemble.

*Disclosure: I was given a Strasburg Children’s dress for review purposes only. All thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Baby Dove GIVEAWAY + Tips for Keeping Babies’ Skin in Tip-Top Shape this Winter

The official start of winter is a few days away, but falling temps make it feel like we’re already in the deep freeze.

That’s why it’s important to protect and take care of our skin—especially the delicate skin of our little ones.

When I was a first-time mom, I remember being terrified of exposing my daughter to the frigid air and brutal winds. Her already dry skin would turn bright red the minute we stepped outside and the moisture would zap immediately—leaving behind cracked, ashy skin.

In addition to bundling your bundles of joy with layers of outwear, protecting their precious skin underneath is the key to healthy, hydrated skin.

I recently caught up with Dr. Tanya Altmann, a California-based pediatrician and Baby Dove partner who offered tips on how to keep our babies’ skin healthy all season long.

baby-dove

Q: How can you best prepare your baby’s skin care routine for the colder weather?
Dr. Altmann: Cold, dry winter weather often causes dry, chapped, irritated cheeks. Cleansing with a mild wash helps prevent dryness and protects skin’s natural barrier and locks in moisture. In addition, apply a mild lotion to baby cheeks regularly, or as frequently as needed to prevent chapping.

Q: If you notice a rash on your baby’s skin, what’s best practice to figure out what it is and how to treat it?
Dr. Altmann: If you find your baby’s bottom becoming red or irritated, wash your baby’s bottom each night with a sensitive, mild moisturizing baby wash and let it air dry. Consult your pediatrician about using a diaper rash cream for a few days if the redness and irritation continues and if it worsens, see the doctor in person.

Q: What baby skin issues do you see most often flare up during the colder months of the year?
Dr. Altmann: Chapped skin, especially dry chapped cheeks.  In addition, any skin issues like eczema that anyone has can often be worse when the skin gets dried out during cold winter months due to indoor heaters and dry air.

Q: Are their issues more prevalent in babies with darker skin tones?
Dr. Altmann: Darker skin tends to show more irritation and scaring from itching, rashes, cuts and scrapes compared to lighter skin. It is also common for darker skin to lose hydration more quickly. Ensuring skin is hydrated is extremely important. Use a cleanser with ¼ cup moisturizing cream, such as Baby Dove Rich Moisture Tip to Toe Wash. This formula helps to repair the skins natural barrier for added protection. To lock-in moisture, apply Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion after bathing as well

Q: Are there fabrics you should avoid with babies?
Dr. Altmann: Avoid rough, non-breathable fabrics.  Dress baby in layers to avoid overheating and sweating when going indoors with heat.

How do you keep your baby’s skin in tip-top shape during the cold winter months?

GIVEAWAY: Would you like to try Baby Dove? If so, leave a comment or Tweet me @BrownGirlGumbo telling me how you plan to keep your baby’s skin healthy this season and you’ll win a Baby Dove collection. One lucky winner will be randomly selected and notified via email by December 20, 2017. This contest is only open to U.S. residents.

Things to Do in NYC: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Family Matinee

When it comes to dance in this country, one name comes to mind: Alvin Ailey. This past Saturday, my daughter and I had the opportunity to see the iconic Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater company perform live at the New York City Center.

For more than five decades, the esteemed African-American dance enterprise has graced stages in front of more than 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on six continents—as well as millions who’ve witnessed their masterful artistry through television broadcasts, film screenings and countless online platforms.

So, to finally see the AAADT up close and personal with my 7-year-old daughter was an experience I won’t soon forget. Saturday’s show was part of the company’s Family Matinee series, which aims to get more families out to experience the beauty of the AAADT during the holiday season.

Divided into three acts with two 15-minute intermissions, the show opened with “r-Evolution, Dream” an enthralling piece inspired by the speeches and sermons of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Led by Hope Boykin, veteran Ailey dancer — the Civil Rights era came to life through a mesmerizing ensemble that didn’t miss a beat. Through fluid movement and awe-inspiring narration by Tony award winner Leslie Odom Jr., the piece delved into Dr. King’s exceptional and unyielding message of unity during one of America’s darkest, yet most constructive times.

The next piece, “Members Don’t Get Weary,” a remarkable display of the current social landscape picked up where “r-Evolution” left off. Set to the music of legendary jazz saxophonist and composer, John Coltrane, the piece captivated the audience with spellbinding steps and seamless choreography. The dancers’ bodies evoked immense emotion with every move—conveying a gripping story of triumph.

The final rendition, “Revelations,” a cornerstone to AAADT’s legacy—was a soul-stirring, hand-clapping and foot-tapping performance that entranced the entire audience from start to finish. This signature masterpiece transfixes you and takes you to a spiritual place. With the stirring church songs and traditional organ chords, you’re transported to the church in which Ailey drew inspiration from while choreographing this piece. It’s as if your soul soars above the seats and floats center stage alongside the artists. Witnessing the effortless elegance and power of this performance is akin to an out-of-body experience (at least what I’d assume one to be).  It’s no wonder the ballet has been seen by more people around the world than any other modern work—it’s that good.

From the brilliant, symbolic costumes, to the top-notch lighting, to the riveting music, the show’s overall production is beyond praiseworthy. While the artists were indeed the stars of the show, the staging was superb and allowed the dancers to elevate and showcase their breathtaking artistry.

To top off an incredible afternoon, guests were also treated to a Q&A session with the dancers and veteran Ailey dancer, Hope Boykin. Attendees learned about their inspiration, background and future aspirations.

Watching the uber-talented dancers demonstrate their creativity through movement has inspired me and my daughter. While I’m sure she didn’t understand some of the elements, art is universal and witnessing poetry in motion is something that everyone can enjoy. After the show, she couldn’t stop twirling and swaying her body from left to right. You never know, I might see her on stage with the ADDT one day. Now that would be a dream.

Below, please find the remaining Family Matinee schedule:

Saturday, Dec 16, 2pm – The Winter in Lisbon, Night Creature, Cry, Revelations
