5 Takeaways from Jada Pinkett Smith’s & Her Mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris’ ‘Red Table Talk’ Event in NYC

Some people tend to sugarcoat things or skirt around sensitive issues, but not Jada Pinkett Smith.

The celebrated actress keeps it real and that’s what makes millions tune into her popular Facebook Watch web series, “Red Table Talk,” which she co-hosts with her mom, Adrienne Banfield-Norris, and her 18-year-old daughter, Willow Smith.

The online talk show, which has taped more than a dozen episodes made its debut on the social networking platform earlier this year and instantly went viral – and for good reason. The content is explosive and engaging. No topic is off limits. They tackle it all. From body image perceptions and beauty ideals to grappling with loss and addiction, the hosts openly share their personal experiences through three distinct generational lenses in the comfort of the Smith’s family home in California.

Enlightening and eye-opening, the co-hosts’ candor and refreshing transparency make the show relatable for many people due to the hosts’ varying ages. Additionally, they have guests like Gabrielle Union and R&B singer August Alsina visit the red table to chat specifically about the various subjects at hand. “Red Table Talk” is the talk of the internet and earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending an intimate panel discussion here in New York City with Jada and her mom to celebrate the series’ new season, which premiered October 22.

While petite, Jada has an undeniably powerful presence that commands the room. She and her mother talked with us mom bloggers about parenting, marriage, self-care and more. Thanks to The Moms for hosting a lovely, illuminating and insightful Mamarazzi event.

Here are 5 of the biggest takeaways I learned from Jada and Adrienne’s red table talk:

  • Parenting is not “one size fits all”: When it comes to raising kids, there’s no one size fits all method. Jada and Will Smith’s rearing came under fire in 2013 when they allowed their son Jaden to move out of their home at the age of 15. Jada expressed that she was initially devastated by her teenage son’s emancipation request, but knew that Jaden was wise beyond his years. Thus, she was confident that he would be fine on his own. Parents should keep in mind that we must tailor how we raise our children based on their unique individuality and personality. No two children are the same so parents must adjust accordingly when it comes to raising them.
  • Titles can be limiting: It was a shock to learn that Jada doesn’t consider herself to be married to Will anymore. While I still believe in traditional “husband” and “wife” titles, Jada made a good point that people are merely human beings on a journey, which doesn’t require them to live within the constraints of the titles placed upon them. Love is boundless and thrives beyond any label or title. Whether you agree or disagree with their unconventional relationship, that’s a concept that many people can get behind.
  • Kids won’t be perfect: There’s no such thing as a perfect person. So, why do so many parents think they can create and mold perfect children? News flash: it’s impossible. Jada eloquently stated that we know that perfection doesn’t exist so why do we put so much pressure on making our kids “perfect?” Let them freely express themselves so that they grow into well-adjusted, confident adults.
  • Open-communication is key: Keeping the lines of communication open with your family breeds trust, confidence and stability. Having discussions about sex, drugs and other taboo topics with teens can be touchy and uncomfortable at first, but will pay off in the end. We were all young once and cultivating a space where your children can come to you to talk about sensitive subjects is the best thing you can give them.
  • Me-time is important: Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom, entrepreneur, corporate executive or Hollywood actress, making time for yourself is crucial for your overall wellbeing. From meditation to pampering yourself with a “goddess bath,” like Jada enjoys, setting aside me-time is a priceless practice. Unwinding is essential and a way to relax and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

Things to do this Weekend: ‘Tinga Tinga Tales’ Tells a Story of Self-Confidence

For me, eye-catching costumes, vibrant characters, imaginative set design, soul-stirring songs and dynamic storytelling are all elements that make a great musical.

New Victory Theater’s new show, “Tinga Tinga Tales: The Musical,” features all those things and more.

Set in Africa’s majestic fields with towering mango trees and buzzing honey bees, the enchanting show reinforces acceptance and community. Aimed at children ages 4-7, the musical tells the universal story of self-doubt, feelings of inferiority and overall lack of confidence through the eyes of a downtrodden chameleon.

Throughout the intermission-free, 70-minute show, the chameleon encounters situations where he strives to be noticed, but doesn’t feel he’s worthy of attention. While he’s on a personal journey of self-discovery, the ensemble cast which includes a tortoise, hippo, elephant, giraffe and lion gets the audience grooving with sing-alongs and dance-offs set to African beats and mesmerizing rhythms.

Disney Celebrates International Day of the Girl with Empowering Initiative

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of working at a national glossy magazine like Ebony or Essence. I was mesmerized by the beauty displayed within their pages. Prominent black people being celebrated for their accomplishments in sports, politics, entertainment and other sectors was something that I couldn’t get enough of. Oh, and don’t get me started on the jaw-dropping fashions and gorgeous beauty spreads. Magazines spoke to me in a way that nothing else did. Plus, my passion for writing cemented my quest for turning my dream into a reality (which eventually came to fruition, but at another magazine).

Today my dream is for my 8-year-old daughter to have those same big dreams and to see them come true!

That’s why I’m so happy that Disney’s “Dream Big, Princess” campaign is encouraging young girls worldwide to follow their dreams too.  To celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of the Girl, which is tomorrow, October 11 – Disney is inviting all guests to Disney Parks around the globe to Disney bound in outfits inspired by their favorite female characters who encourage them to be confident, fearless, creative and more! From Moana to Tiana, Disney has many inspiring role models for guests to choose from.

Not sure what Disney bounding is? It’s simply dressing up in regular clothes that are inspired by a character’s ensemble. Matching the character’s color scheme is key! For example, if you’re Disney bounding as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid,” a purple, off-the-shoulder top and a glittering, turquoise skirt (sequins preferred) would be the perfect “under the sea” look.

Now that you know how to Disney bound, there’s more! Stay tuned for the #DreamBigPrincess video series later this month, celebrating the inspiring stories and words of advice from female trailblazers across industries and around the world, captured by 21 talented young women from 13 countries.

So, here’s how you can join the empowering movement:

  • Disney bound as your favorite female Disney character tomorrow, October 11th at Disney Parks worldwide
  • From October 10 through November 20th use the hashtag #DreamBigPrincess on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and each “like” will unlock a US $1 donation from Disney Worldwide Services to Girl Up, the United Nations Foundation’s program supporting girls’ leadership and empowerment (minimum donation: $500,000/maximum donation: $1 million).

Before you dress up in your best Disney bounding ensembles, be sure to read Disney’s guidelines and attire rules, etc.:

L.A’s Cheat Day Land Museum Will Satisfy All Your Junk Food and Art Cravings

When it comes to food, we all have our vices. Maybe it’s chocolate or perhaps ice cream? No matter your preference, many people have their favorite junk food indulgences. That’s why visiting the Cheat Day Land Museum in Los Angeles was such a guilt-free treat.

cheat-day-land-museum-la

Comprised of 17 completely immersive, interactive exhibitions featuring common sweet and savory “cheat day” delights, the pop-up museum is a new, temporary installation for the Instagram set and art lovers alike. The photo-friendly destination celebrates junk food and turns some of the most popular cravings into masterful works of art.

Located in the heart of the art district, the fun and colorful displays are a welcome addition to the L.A art scene. Patrons can snap photos with giant soda pops and swing from donuts without worrying about pesky calories.

Created by a five-sibling team, the project is the brainchild of the eldest, Rubi Rymenmy. Ironically, Rymenmy and her family own a fitness studio on the southwest side of the city. Since they’re in the business of being fit and healthy, Cheat Day Land is an escape and manifestation of their own cravings. They know and acknowledge that everyone deserves desserts occasionally.

The family-run museum also showcases artwork from Rymenmy’s brothers. Their vibrant paintings give the space a pop-culture feel that will satisfy the cravings of foodies and art aficionados.

From hamburgers to pancakes, the pop-up is a must for those looking to “cheat” on their diets and indulge in a ton of fun!

Cheat Day Land opened October 1st and runs through October 31st. Tickets cost $38 and can be purchased here.
