Nintendo Launches Two Video Games to Tap Into Your Kids’ Crafty Sides

I’m a proud ‘80s baby who grew up in the ‘90s. That means I’m the first generation to be exposed to the undeniable power of Nintendo.

Now that I’m a 30-something mom of two, it’s fascinating to watch my kids play with the same system responsible for creating immeasurable joy and many cherished childhood memories. Tomorrow, the Japan-based company is launching two new games (March 29): Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn available on the Nintendo DS3 system, the popular handheld device and Yoshi’s Crafted World which is compatible on the Nintendo Switch console.

A couple weeks ago, my lucky kids got a sneak peek of the video games at the flagship Nintendo store at Rockefeller Center in the heart of New York City. At the private event, they were able to test the new games, participate in fun crafts, scavenger hunts and enjoy a scrumptious breakfast.

Unsurprisingly, my craft-obsessed 9-year-old daughter enjoyed Kirby’s Extra Epic Yarn, which boasts realistic-looking yarn animations. While my 5-year-old son couldn’t get enough of Yoshi’s Crafted World, which features incredible, sophisticated graphics that look like pages torn from a virtual scrapbook. Both games tap into young players’ crafty sides while unlocking their imaginations. Each game takes players on adventurous journeys that challenge their problem-solving skills while allowing them to demonstrate fun gameplay techniques.

For someone who spent countless hours playing Super Mario Bros. back in the day, it warms my heart to see my kids enjoying some of the things that brought me so much happiness!

While many parents might frown at screen time (video games, YouTube or television), I don’t. I believe like with most guilty pleasures, moderation is key. As a parent, I make sure that I monitor what my kids watch and indulge in. I grew up playing video games and I turned out fine. I’m sure my kids will too.

New Victory Theater Celebrates Latin Music with an Unforgettable ‘Fiesta’

When you think of Latin music, one can’t help but envision mesmerizing beats, hard-hitting drums, foot-tapping vibrations and beautiful harmonies.

Earlier this month, my kids got to hear some of those rich, cultural rhythms up-close-and-personal at the Fiesta con Sonia de Los Santos performance at New Victory Theater. Their senses were treated to the sights and sounds of music representing several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela and the Caribbean. Plus, the rhythms of hip-swerving salsa, which originated right here in the heart of New York City.

Led by the super bubbly and brilliant singer, Sonia De Los Santos, the multicultural band, comprised of a talented group of musicians rocked the stage for an hour. Throughout the intermission-free show, each band member gave audiences a brief description of their respective instruments, which provided nice educational moments.

My kids especially loved when the junior sibling duo bandmates made appearances. What child doesn’t enjoy watching a peer grace a big stage doing what they love? They stole the show for them with their awe-inspiring voices and musical prowess.

From maracas to merengue, the spirit of Latin music was celebrated with an incredible fiesta we won’t soon forget. Plus, prior to the show, my kids got a chance to engage and play with some of the instruments featured in the show.

Review: ‘Ajijaak On Turtle Island’ Soars at New Victory Theater

Many kids learn about Native Americans in the context of being the original North American settlers. However, in many cases, the rich history and beautiful culture of these indigenous people typically goes unheard. That’s why I was beyond excited to take my kids to see New Victory Theater’s latest production, “Ajijaak On Turtle Island,” this past weekend.

The 60-minute show encapsulates the magnificence and splendor of Native American folklore through music, dance, and of course, puppetry. For children, it’s the perfect introduction to Native American arts & culture.

Set on Turtle Island, “Ajijaak On Turtle Island” tells the fabled tale of a young whooping crane faced with finding her way after she’s separated from her family. During her first migration south, she learns valuable lessons like the trials of independence and meets interesting creatures along her journey. From deer to bison, each encounter sheds light on the importance and dangerous effects of climate change in an effective way that children can comprehend.

The spell-binding puppetry from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, music by Grammy award winner Ty Defoe, and engaging storytelling keeps children and adults alike entertained throughout the intermission-free show. Plus, the performance beautifully centers around beating drums, making it an integral part of the messaging, which beautifully celebrates Native American culture.
