BGG: Goes to Brooklyn Fashion Week(end)

BGG was invited to attend the festivities of Brooklyn’s Fashion Week(end) this past weekend, but because I was out-of-town I wasn’t able to go. You know I had to have someone cover this fashionable event, so I appointed my BGG correspondent YG to bring us the lowdown on the popular borough’s fashion fete. Here’s her take on the shows:

Brooklyn Fashion Weekend was at Northside Piers parking lot. The parking lot space was transformed into a glam fashion event (or as glam as a parking lot can be) with live music, beautiful artwork and of course beautiful models. I got there Saturday around 5pm for a cocktail reception that had a wide variety of liquors. The fashion shows started an hour late (ofcourse) and I got seated in the 2nd row – not bad!

A model being prepped before the show starts.

The first designer to show was Catalin Botezatu. The line consisted mainly of swim-wear. The ladies’ swim-wear was over-the-top with crazy hair, leather gloves and massive jewelry. It was sort of had a Palm Beach resort meets Dominatrix vibe.

Miss Bruno’s line was tied in well with fancy scarves on each model with pockets!

Color Heritage had a vivid and interesting collection, but nothing totally outrageous.

My absolute favorite one was Catou. They put on an amazing performance of a staged martial arts fight to open the show that was followed by a brilliant fashion show consisting of geisha-inspired lingerie corsets with fur! There were also pretty spring-like dresses and lots of beautiful jewelry piled on in a very tasteful way.

There was a consistent trend of feathers around the eyes that I’ve been seeing alot in fashion magazines.

Joan Vaccianna’s show was fantastic too. She has a chic, yet urban twist to her garments.

I had a great time on Saturday! 🙂

Sunday was a disaster! One of the fashion line’s can be best described as clowns meets hobos. I left after 3 shows and 1 awful performance!

That wraps it up!

Hot Spot: Los Angeles

The City of Angels has always been one of my favorite places to visit. I’ve had an affinity toward L.A ever since I made my first trek there to visit family back in 1998. It was beautiful, the

Happy Presidents’ Day

With most of us being out of school and work in honor of President’s Day, I decided to take the day off from BGG. In the meantime, you can check out a Q&A I did with with Glam about Brown Girl Gumbo. I’ll be back tomorrow stirring up everything that chic brown girls (and guys) love!

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Even though he left this earth 40 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s memory and legacy are still alive today. We BGs and guys should be especially grateful for his contribution toward making our lives better in this country. His unyielding desire for all people to be treated equally despite the color of their skin was remarkable. If it weren’t for his courage and others civil rights activists like him, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Take a moment out of your day to stop and reflect and honor this outstanding man’s legacy. Be sure to check out your local newpapers or go online to find MLK-related events taking place in your area today.

Also, be sure to watch Oprah’s special show today (check your local listings) in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

He may be gone physically, but his dream will live forever!

No Favorite Fabulous Photos Today

Unfortunately, I am unable to post my favorite fabulous photos today. My computer is not getting an Internet connection for some reason. Therefore, I’m using my Blackberry to write this posting.

Anyway, I’ll be back next week after the holidays. Who knows, if my computer is functioning properly this weekend I may post the photos of the week.

Happy Holidays!

I’ve Been Tagged!

Typically, I post my favorite fabulous photos of the week, but I’ve been tagged by one of my favorite blogs, The Daily Cookie. This is my first time being tagged since I’ve only been a part of the blogging community for a short few months. For those of you who don’t know what being “tagged” is, it’s when a fellow blogger asks for you to share several tidbits about yourself and post them on your blog.

Here are the The Rules: Each player starts with 7 random facts/habits about themselves. People who are tagged need to then report this on their own blog with their 7 things as well as these rules. They then need to tag 7 others and list their names on their blog. They are also asked to leave a comment for each of the tagged, to let them know that they have been tagged and to read the blog.

Here are my 7 random facts/habits:

1. I have a serious obsession with sugary candies like sour watermelon slices, gummi worms and any candy besides chocolate.

2. I watch reruns of Soul Food (the series) on BETJ like I’ve never seen every episode on Showtime when they originally aired.

3. If I could, I would eat baked salmon and rice for dinner every night of the week. To be truthful, I almost do.

4. I used to work at People magazine.

5. I’ve never watched one episode of Friends – ever. Nilla Cookie, I know you probably can’t believe this since it’s your favorite show!

6. When I was young I wanted to be just like Vanessa L. Williams when I grew up! I was determined to show the world that I had the “Right Stuff!” LOL

7. I have a huge crush on Nick Lachey. I know he’s with Vanessa Minnillo and I am happily married, but in another life…!!!!

Now I’m tagging Tres Chic Style, Divine Blackness and Kreative Mix

Turkey Day Travel Tips

If you’re like many Americans, you’ll be traveling to be with your family on Thanksgiving. Because I will be one of those millions at the airport on Wednesday, I thought that I would offer some advice to make your traveling experience less aggravating as possible.

Since 2007 has been one of the worst years in airline travel for various reasons, it is in your best interest to pack patience because you’ll need it. I traveled several times this year and none of my experiences were pleasant. There was always something causing a delay whether it was the weather or a computer glitch, it just seemed like the airline Gods were frowning down on passengers consistently.

So here are a few tips that I hope will help ease your traveling woes:

1. Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to take off during the security checkpoint.

2. Empty the loose change from all of your pockets to speed up the security check process.

3. Bring a good book or magazine (too bad there isn’t a BGG magazine…yet!) to help pass the time.

4. Subscribe to an airport Internet service (typically no more than $8.99/month) for your laptop. That way you can always have BGG at your fingertips!

5. Bring healthy snacks to munch on while you wait. Remember, everything sold at airports is ridiculously higher than neighborhood drugstores, etc.

6. Be sure to fully charge your iPod or MP3 player the night before your trip. It will help you relax and tune out annoying passengers.

7. Don’t check your bags if at all possible. This will save you a lot of time and in some cases, your belongings. With the insurgence of bags being checked due to the 311 rule, (liquids no larger than 3 oz. in a clear plastic bag) more bags have been lost a result.
