Exclusive Interview: Actress Tasha Smith Dishes on Zane Books, Friendship & ‘Empire’

Tasha Smith is the kind of actress whose roles are so infectiously relatable that she instantly becomes that “friend in your head.”

For over 20 years, Smith, 43, has been gracing our big and small screens. I first remember seeing her serve as Tyra Banks’ friend and go-to acting coach on the reality modeling competition show, “America’s Next Top Model.” I recall watching her give the aspiring models a crash course in acting with funny, over-the-top antics that made her memorable.

Tasha-Smith-Pic

Since then, Smith has gone on to become one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood. She’s played roles in several Tyler Perry productions including “Daddy’s Little Girls, “Why Did I Get Married,” its sequel and current spin-off television series, “For Better Or Worse,” plus a host of other movies and TV shows.

Smith’s big personality, quick wit and humor often translate into her roles, but not all the time. In fact, the New Jersey native showed a more subdued, serious side as psychotherapist “Dr. Marcella Spencer,” in last year’s steamy feature film, “Addicted.”

“Addicted” is currently available on DVD here.

Now, in a recurring role on Fox’s breakout hit, “Empire,” Smith is continuing to show viewers that she’s an actress who can take on just about any character—well, she is an acting coach after all!

I recently caught up with the actress where she talked about Zane’s erotic books, why “Empire” is the modern day “Martin,” friendship and more!

Check out the Q&A below:

BGG: You’ve played so many roles in your career. What character did you learn the most from playing?
Tasha Smith: That’s a great question. A long time ago I had done a Jerry Bruckheimer TV movie where I played an astronaut stuck out of space. We thought we were going to die. That was before a lot of the comedy stuff I had done came out. I learned a lot. My character had a son and was married and lived with the fear of never seeing her family again. Her fight to survive was really important. At that point in my life, I wasn’t really honest about fear. You might meet people who say they don’t have any fears because they have faith. But, I believe that all of us have some kind of fear. I learned a lot discovering the fears of that character. It was a wonderful learning experience for me.

BGG: Who was your biggest inspiration for becoming an actress?
TS: I have to really go back to my best friend. I have people who inspire me now, but when I was young with a dream at 15 years old I met who is my best friend to this day, Tisha Campbell-Martin. We have been best friends since we were 15. I’m the godmother of her youngest son, Ezekial. She had come to Camden, NJ with a guy she was dating. At the time I was just a girl from Camden, so to meet her was very inspiring. She was the hotness, honey! That was Tisha Campbell, baby! She inspired me and taught me about integrity, character, work ethic, professionalism and how to behave on the set, etc. When I moved to California and Tisha got “Martin,” I also worked as her assistant. Through that time I really learned a lot.

BGG: Prior to landing the role as Dr. Marcella Spencer in “Addicted,” were you a fan of Zane erotic novels?
TS: Listen, first of all Zane’s books…let me stop! (laughing) I was very familiar with her as an author. I wasn’t one to sit and read her books all the time because I went through this time in my life where I was celibate and reading Zane’s books was not helping me to do that! All you want to do is have sex after reading Zane books!

BGG: I know that you’ve spoken openly about being a Christian, does your faith ever conflict with roles you’re approached to play?
TS: Absolutely not! I’m an actor and I can’t judge characters based on my spirituality and how I choose to believe in God. To me, whatever your choice of spirituality is, it’s your personal choice. I may play a character that doesn’t believe in God at all. It doesn’t interfere at all because I believe in God and thank Him for having a connection.

BGG: While watching Oprah’s Selma special last month, I noticed that you were in attendance. What was that experience like?
TS: It was one of the best, most beautiful experiences of my life. That lady (Oprah) knows how to throw party! I had a chance to meet Berry Gordy and sit down and talk to Smokey Robinson who was just divine.

BGG: You’re now on the hit Fox show, “Empire,” were you at all surprised by the positive response it’s been getting?
TS: I am so happy and grateful to be a part of that movement because it is truly a movement. You know when something is greater than you can imagine? I think “Empire” is bigger than anything we ever imagined. I don’t think anyone knew just how infectious it was going to be. It’s like the best thing on TV since “Martin.” Remember when “Martin” first came out and we were all addicted to it back in the day? Every time Martin did a taping, every celebrity wanted to go to it. That was like the thing to do. Every basketball team, every actress, every singer, everybody was addicted to “Martin!” To me, “Empire” is even better than that. I think everybody is addicted to Lucious and Cookie!

BGG: What’s the one beauty product you can’t live without?
TS: I have to have NaturaBissé Diamond Cream. It’s a little bourgeois, it’s a little expensive, but I can’t live without it! It’s a moisturizer for the face and it’s just incredible.

“Empire,” airs on Fox Wednesdays at 9pm EST.

What’s your favorite Tasha Smith movie/TV show?

Interview: Erotic Author Zane On Being a Trailblazer and the DVD Release of ‘Addicted’

Before “Fifty Shades of Grey,” there was Zane.

We BGs know that she’s been penning steamy page-turners well before erotic literature became pop-culture approved.

For nearly 20 years, the trailblazing author has written over two dozen erotic novels, including her New York Times bestseller, “Addicted,” which was adapted for the big screen last fall.

Zane’s sexy stories have also been the basis for a couple of cable television series on Cinemax garnering praise from fans and critics alike.

In addition to her own book, TV and film projects, the D.C-based writer also publishes books for other authors.

I recently caught up with Zane to chat about the soon-to-be released “Addicted” DVD, her favorite book and of course what everyone wants to know—does her art imitate life?

ADDICTED_dvd_ocard_skew[5]

“Addicted” starring Sharon Leal, Boris Kodjoe, Tasha Smith, and Tyson Beckford was released OnDemand on Tuesday (Jan. 27) and will be available here on DVD February 10th.

Check out the Q&A:

BGG: Being that Addicted was your film debut, were you surprised by its success?
Zane: I honestly expected it because the book had such a large fan base, globally. I was pleased that it went as well as it did. I did expect it to do well because I have high expectations for my stuff in general.

BGG: What can viewers expect from the Addicted DVD that they didn’t get at the theaters?
Zane: There’s an unrated version (for the Video OnDemand), additional sex scenes and some bonus features, as well.

BGG: Do you plan on turning any of your other books into big screen adaptations?
Zane: Yes, I am definitely planning on doing more. I always knew that “Addicted” would be my segue into film.

BGG: Why did you decide to have someone else write the script for Addicted?
Zane: I was originally asked if I wanted to do it. At the time I had a lot going on. They had various scriptwriters pitch to me over the phone and tell me how they envisioned the script going. While I didn’t necessarily write it, I was involved in selecting the scriptwriters and discussing where they should build, etc. Had I written it, it would’ve been like cutting up one of my babies. What ended up on screen I don’t think I could have done that without getting in my feelings. It would’ve involved me getting rid of so much and I would’ve been too caught up in the characters.

BGG: What was the biggest challenge you faced adapting the book into a movie?
Zane: The biggest and most obvious challenge was that “Addicted” was just shy of 95,000 words and a novel told from a first-person’s perspective, while a movie is a totally different vehicle. The entire book is told through that perspective: what she’s thinking, what she’s feeling, etc. Of course a motion picture is dialogue heavy, but the reason it’s called a motion picture is because a lot of it is acting. So having actors make something resonate by the way they look or move was important.

BGG: Do you prefer to be referred to as an erotic or romance author?
Zane: I am what I am. I never set out to be anything in particular. So whatever people want to call me, I’m fine. I don’t know what other people do, but I feel like I have a very different and unique writing style, as well as the authors I publish. The book I’m writing now, I’m about to scare myself (laughing)!

BGG: There seems to be an uptick in erotic literature. As a trailblazer, what do you think of the whole phenomenon?
Zane: I think that people are more open to it now. When I first came around, there were some out there, but they weren’t getting a lot of attention. When I first came out, booksellers were like, ‘I’m not carrying that on my shelves.’ But a couple of years later, a woman thanked me for keeping her lights on.

BGG: Books like yours helped pave the way for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” what do you think about all the attention it’s received?
Zane: I think it’s great marketing. She (author E. L. James) was able to be on all the top media outlets and have the right people helping to promote her. I’m not mad at her. I’m happy for her.

BGG: I’m sure “Addicted” has a special place in your heart, would you say it’s your favorite book you’ve written?
Zane: All of my books have a special meaning to me. I wouldn’t let them go out into the public unless I felt like I’d accomplished what I set out to accomplish. Generally, but not always, my favorite book is the one that I’m currently writing at that moment. I get really caught up in my stories. That being said, right now I’m finishing up “Vengeance, which is the next book in the “Addicted” series. So, right now I’m excited and living and breathing those characters. I always try to outdo myself. In my mind, every book that I put out is better than all my other books I’ve put out; at least that’s my goal. I’m always trying to constantly evolve and grow as a writer. Of course, I’ve matured quite a bit since then so it’s a different voice, but I’m still the same person. Now it’s just a more mature and seasoned one.

BGG: Do you think you’ll ever explore any other genres outside of erotica?
Zane: I already have, but most people just don’t know it. I did “Breaking the Cycle,” which was about domestic abuse and it won an NAACP Image award. I do plan to write another genre and do it in a really specific way so that people will say, ‘now that’s definitely not erotica!’ I also plan on doing young adult novels too.

BGG: Are some of the scenarios and scenes from your books real? Have you lived out some of them?
Zane: Some of it is, most of it is, and some of the wild stuff is, but I never tell people what those things are (laughing)!

Are you a fan of Zane erotic novels? If so, what’s your favorite? Also, did you see “Addicted,” when it was in theaters?

In fact, the author, whom I’ve chatted with throughout the years was inspired to create the blog-turned-book by her great aunt and opera singer, Margaret Tyne, who performed with the legendary Duke Ellington during the 1950s. Gainer curated the book (and blog) by visiting libraries and combing through countless archives and photographs of glamourous black women.

Tupac’s Lyrics Inspire Broadway’s New Musical ‘Holler If Ya Hear Me’

Yesterday would’ve been Tupac (2Pac) Shakur’s 43rd birthday.

It’s hard to believe that I was only 16 when the iconic rapper, poet, activist and actor was shot and killed in Las Vegas. Fast forward 18 years and fans like me are still being captivated by his prolific lyrics. This time not just on our iPods, but on Broadway.

This past Saturday I was invited to see, “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” a musical inspired by the late rapper’s lyrics. Being that I’ve been a fan of Tupac’s music since I was a teen, I was excited to see the show. Admittedly,  at first I was a bit hesitant when I saw the commercial featuring the show’s star, Saul Williams. Initially, I thought the musical was going to be about Tupac’s life; so I felt Williams was an interesting choice to play the part. Luckily, prior to the show I did my research and realized that the show wouldn’t be based on Tupac at all, just his lyrics.

Holler-If-Ya-Hear-Me-Musical

Directed by Kenny Leon, the man behind Broadway’s hit “Motown,” “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” is an all too familiar story—a man (Williams) tempted to go back to a life of crime after the death of a friend cut down by gun violence. The story also includes sub-plots about family, love, change, race, hope and friendship. While the storyline may have been a bit average, the way in which the plot weaved in with some of his greatest songs was nothing short of brilliant.

Fans of Tupac know just how versatile his work was and the show exemplified that talent. With songs such as “Keep Ya Head Up,” “Dear Mama,” and “Life Goes On,” viewers who may have been unfamiliar with his lyrics were given a glimpse into his inspiring mindset. While lyrics from “Hail Mary” and “If I Die 2night” provided a look into his more emotional, darker side. And, his political and even light-hearted views were showcased in songs like the show’s namesake, “Holler If Ya Hear Me” and the playful, “I Get Around.”

Broadway veteran actress Tonya Pinkins, along with the show’s leads: Saul Williams, Christopher Jackson, Saycon Sengbloh, as well as the supporting cast were incredibly charismatic and energetic making the show entertaining from start to finish. At times, it felt like a concert!

Although we’ll never know if  Tupac would’ve approved of his work being featured on the Great White Way, we can rest assured that his mom, Afeni Shakur, gives it her stamp of approval since she serves as one of the show’s producers.

The show is a great testament to just how much of a cultural influence and impact his music had on an entire generation. Mesmerizing performances and legendary music make “Holler If Ya Hear Me,” a must-see for those looking to take a nostalgic trip back in time when Tupac’s music reigned supreme; to me, it still does.

Holler If Ya Hear Me,” is currently in previews and officially opens June 19 at the Palace Theater in New York City. Tickets are on sale  here!

Have you seen “Holler If Ya Hear Me?” If so, what are your thoughts? If not, what’s your favorite Tupac song?
