Great Moisturizers for All BG Hair Types!

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not who you would call a “hair” person. Although I live in New York City, I get my hair done in my hometown, Chicago. I know that sounds crazy, but I head back to the Windy City several times a year. Last year I flew to Chicago 8 times!

Don’t get me wrong, I have had my hair done here before, but the agony of sitting in a salon wasting away precious hours is not my idea of time well-spent. So in order to maintain my mane, I wash and condition it on my own in between touch-ups and trims.

As you can probably assume, I’m a simple BG when it comes to hair styles. I typically wear my hair like you see in my profile picture, a chignon or chic ponytail. When I’m feeling adventurous or desperately in need of a change, I’ll opt for the undone 2-strand flat twist style. My husband thinks I’m boring in the hair department and he might be right, but one thing’s for sure…there are just some styling products that I can’t live without. For example, Soft-Sheen Carson’s Optimum Dry Hair Healer is the absolute best!! It works wonders on my oftentimes lackluster locks.

For Clear Skin One Word — Cetaphil!

If you’re one of the lucky few who never experiences a blemish, pimple or simply dull-looking skin, you’re probably the envy of all of your friends. For the rest of us mere mortals, we have to religiously apply skin care products in an effort to keep our skin looking clear and acne-free.

Cetaphil is one of those effective, tried and true products that have been around since many of us were born. Chances are you’ve tried one of their products whether it was recommended by your friend or dermatologist, this brand is synonymous with achieving clean and clear skin. My sister actually told me about Cetaphil a few years ago.

I tend to have very oily skin with occasional breakouts and washing my face each day with their Daily Facial Cleanser really helps control the oil. The best part about Cetaphil products is that they are fragrance-free and gentle enough for all skin types. Since they don’t have a sweet, girly smell, guys can use them too! Plus, all of their products are conveniently available at drugstores nationwide.

If you’ve never tried Cetaphil, get $2 off of Cetaphil Daily Advance Ultra Hydrating Lotion for joining the Cetaphil club community by logging on to www.cetaphil.com/browngirlgumbo

Nip/Tuck?

Now that former Destiny’s Child member, Kelly Rowland has confirmed to People magazine after much speculation, that she did in fact undergo breast augmentation, made me think about the increasing number of celebrities and now ordinary working-class people who go under the knife for the quest of physical perfection.

Of course, everyone has the right to choose whether or not they want to have cosmetic surgery, but do we hold celebrities like Rowland to a certain standard? She told People, “It is a decision I made for myself. I like it, and that’s all that counts. I now feel complete.” Do you think that by her admitting her procedure, gives young girls who see her as a role model the wrong impression of loving themselves for who they are?

According to cosmetic surgery statistics, these are the most common procedures:

Whether it’s liposuction or a nose job, would you ever consider having cosmetic surgery? Men, do you prefer women with natural breasts over surgically-enhanced ones or does it matter at all? Please share your thoughts!

Breathtaking Bronzers

With spring around the corner, it’s time to pick up the hottest bronzers that will make your dull, winter-ridden skin glow and beam with radiance.

I recently tried a Wet n’ Wild mosaic bronzer and have been hooked ever since. The mixture of bronzes, golds, pinks and peaches make mosaic bronzers a must-have to achieve a semi-dewy, skin-kissed look.

The combination of colors create a sultry shimmer that will make your skin look as if you’ve spent weeks vacationing in the Caribbean!

Meet Celebrity Hairstylist: Takisha Sturdivant-Drew

If you watched the Oscars last night, you know that there were some beautiful hairdos on the red carpet. Although celebrities’ hair always look gorgeous at events, they don’t get their coifs that way on their own — they have top-notch hairstylists to create eye-catching styles. Pantene’s Celebrity Stylist, Takisha Sturdivant-Drew is one of them.

Takisha is actress Kerry Washington’s current hairstylist and has styled luminaries such as Malinda Williams, Naomi Harris, Brandy, Erika Alexander, Rachel Nick, Cover Girl model Kiara and actor Nick Cannon — to name a few.

This New York native’s work can be seen in films such as the Oscar nominated “Ray,” “She Hate Me,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “The Fantastic Four,” among others. Takisha’s styles have also been featured in the print and television commercial ads for clients Pantene, L’Oreal, and Aveda as well as in Vanity Fair, W, InStyle, Essence, Nylon, Hollywood Life, Black Enterprise, and Ebony magazines.

Even though we might not be able to showcase our manes at star-studded events, we BGs take pride in our hair nonetheless. Whether we wear it natural, curly, textured, straight, braided or somewhere in between, our hair is always on point. That’s why I interviewed Takisha to bring you guys the hair 411.

Check out our Q&A!

BGG: When did you know that you wanted to become a professional hairstylist?
Takisha: I knew when I was 14 years old that I wanted to become a hair stylist so I went to a Vocational School in Queens and I was at the top of my class the whole time.

BGG: How did you get your start as a celebrity hairstylist?
Takisha: I got my start six years ago when one of my clients referred Kerry Washington to me. From then on I left the salon I was working at and started working for myself and opened Takisha & Associates in Brooklyn, NY. It’s been five years now and business is great!

BGG: What is Kerry Washington’s favorite hairstyle?
Takisha: Her favorite hairstyle is something that is not to neat. She loves a soft brushed out wavy look.

BGG: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about African-American hair?
Takisha: That it take a lot of heat. Blow drying, and then using a curling iron at the same time is too much heat for our hair.

BGG: What will be the hot looks for the upcoming spring season?
Takisha: Hot looks for this spring will be short cropped hair styles. Some fun colors like blonde, platinum and red as well.

BGG: What single styling beauty tool should every BG (Brown Girl) have in her home salon?
Takisha: Good question! Everyone should have a flat iron to smooth out their hair really quickly when it becomes frizzy and Pantene products to protect the hair from heat and perfect your styles.

FHI Technique Series 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron for $84 available at www.amazon.com.

BGG: What style do you enjoy creating the most for your clients? Why?
Takisha: I love a curly hair style. It is very sexy, messy, and you can sleep on it but still have a great look the next couple of days.

BGG: Are there any products that you recommend for maintaining healthy hair for both relaxed and natural hair?
Takisha: I recommend using Pantene Relaxed and Natural conditioning shampoo, and the Pantene Relaxed and Natural Deep Conditioning Mask. These products restore moisture and keep hair healthy. You can purchase it at any drug store.

Available at drugstores nationwide.

BGG: What advice can you give a young woman who wants to become a celebrity hairstylist?
Takisha: Know your craft, build an amazing portfolio, get an agent, and always be a professional. After that it’s really word of mouth.

BGG: Thanks for taking the time to speak with me!
Takisha: No problem, thank you.

Sudsy Scents

Nothing gets my day started like a rejuvenating shower. There’s absolutely nothing better than having that precious alone time to think while lathering up your favorite scented body wash. The warm water cascading over your body gets your blood pumping and energized for the day ahead.

I tend to come up with some of the best ideas while in the shower, plus it’s the only time I can belt out the Alicia Keys’ feel-good song, “No One,” without my husband begging me to be quiet.

As opposed to bar soaps, shower gels always leave my skin feeling clean and smooth. For some reason, bar soaps tend to make my skin feel dull and dry.

Whatever soaps or gels you use, showers are necessary luxuries that I look forward to every single day and I hope you do too!

Here are a few of my favorite soapy suds:

Victoria’s Secret Secret Garden Shower & Bath Washes available at www.victoriassecret.com 5 for $30

Philosophy Pomegranate Shower & Bath Gelee available at www.sephora.com for $20

Bath & Body Works Apple Shower Gel available at www.bathandbodyworks.com for $9.50

Suave Cucumber Melon Shower Gel available at www.drugstore.com or nationwide drugstores for $1.99 to $2.99 (depending on store and location) I buy mine from Target for $1.99, but they retail for $2.99 at Duane Reade in NYC.

Dove Body Wash Cream Oil Cherry Blossom & Almond Scent available at www.drugstore.com or drugstores nationwide for $7.59

Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Body Wash available at www.carolsdaughter.com or www.sephora.com for $13.50

Suave Cocoa & Shea Butter Shower Gel available at www.drugstore.com or nationwide drugstores for $1.99 to $2.99 (depending on store and location) I buy mine from Target for $1.99, but they retail for $2.99 at Duane Reade in NYC.

Miracle Mineral Makeup

Last week during Fashion Week I was invited to a blogger meet-and-greet event hosted by Glam Media at the Libary Hotel in Midtown. At the very laid-back, yet somewhat posh event, I had the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow bloggers while sipping wine and nibbling fancy finger foods. Being that I am an incessant makeup and beauty enthusiast, I was super excited that there was a professional makeup artist on hand from Jane Iredale – The Skin Care Makeup to give us willing participants mini-makeovers.

Even though I had gone to the event with my usual makeup already applied, I was excited to get it redone by a professional. Prior to the makeover, Kevin (the makeup artist) told us all about the benefits of Jane Iredale. I listened, but didn’t really think that the products’ “mineral benefits” would be any different from all of the other cosmetic sales pitches you hear all the time.

To my pleasant surprise, all of the seemingly false beauty banter lived up to the hype. Kevin told us that the mineral foundations and concealers included acne-fighting agents while creating an anti-pancake barely-there feel and he was right.

I had a hideous pimple that appeared to have dissipated after the makeup application. Plus, it felt like I wasn’t wearing any makeup although I had on foundation, concealer, eye shadow, blush and lip gloss (I could feel the gloss of course)! I must say, after looking in the mirror all I could think was, “Why couldn’t I have known him 3 years ago so I could’ve hired him for my wedding!” I looked amazing and have never felt prettier.

If you have never used or heard of Jane Iredale’s products, definitely check them out at www.janeiredaledirect.com. Trust me, they have a wide range of products capable of complementing every BG’s skin tone!
