Angels On Earth: My Trip to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

A few weeks ago I experienced a trip of a lifetime. No, it wasn’t to an exotic locale or luxurious beachfront resort. I traveled to one of the most special places I’ve ever visited—St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

The entrance into St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Invited by the hospital to see first-hand how it operates, I was excited to learn more. I’d heard about the hospital throughout the years from commercials and seeing Marlo Thomas (the founder’s daughter) speak about it on TV, but I didn’t have a true understanding of everything the child-focused healthcare facility does.

For starters, I learned that the hospital only takes patients (ages birth to 18) with the most life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and sickle cell disease, which is a blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and sickle-shaped, instead of soft and round. And, the parents of the patients will never receive a bill.

Yes, you read that correctly! PARENTS OF ST. JUDE CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL PATIENTS WILL NEVER RECEIVE A MEDICAL BILL!  The hospital believes that these parents are undergoing some of the most incredible stress imaginable and worrying about medical bills shouldn’t be one of them. From the finest foods to state-of-the-art housing, this one-of-a-kind hospital caters to every need that a family enduring these unfortunate circumstances could want—at no cost.

From the moment I arrived at the hospital, there was a warm and inviting atmosphere unlike any other hospital I’ve stepped foot in. The walls were covered in colorful murals and breathtakingly beautiful artwork created by the patients. Elephants were also a recurrent theme  throughout the hospital and housing facilities. A symbol of luck in many cultures, elephants are also known to live long lives.

Throughout my weekend visit, I met some of the most extraordinary children that I’ve ever encountered. Their strength was beyond admirable and their determination nothing less than outstanding. Courtney, 10, who suffers from sickle cell disease was beaming with star quality. Her smile and outgoing personality made it hard to believe that she’s ever suffered from any disease.

Courtney and me.

The young beauty has been treated at the hospital since the age of 2. Thanks to St. Jude’s groundbreaking research, Courtney thrives with the help of a drug called hydroxyuera.  She told me that she “loves New York” and wants to move here one day to pursue her dreams of becoming a singer/actress.

“I’ve seen ‘Mary Poppins‘ and ‘The Lion King‘ while in New York,” she said with excitement. With her spunk and bright outlook, there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s well on her way to becoming one of Broadway’s biggest stars.

The entire visit was filled with inspiring stories, harrowing tales and encouraging accounts of courage. This trip has forever changed my perspective on life. So many of us take our health and our children’s health for granted. Watching those young people endure some of the most painful challenges while still smiling is something that will stay with me forever.

While I gained so much insight and knowledge during my trip, I can’t begin to tell you guys everything. Here are few of the best tidbits of information that I received:

*St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas (star of Make Room for Daddy) in 1962.

*Founder Danny Thomas vowed that he would build a hospital that took in all patients no matter their race, creed or religion. At that time, his decision and promise played a pivotal role in the segregated south during the 1960s.

*No family ever receives a bill for the care their child receives at the hospital.

*St. Jude Children’s Hospital is the leader in sickle cell research in the world.

*Approximately 1 in 375 African-Americans is born with sickle cell disease each year.

*Bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation is the only cure for sickle cell disease and St. Jude performed the first successful one in 1983.

*For every child treated at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, thousands more have been saved worldwide through the hospital’s discoveries.

*It costs 1.8 million dollars A DAY to run St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

*Everyone associated with the hospital are truly angels on earth! From the volunteers to the doctors, everyone is like a family.

Check out this cute video:

As a parent, it is my hope that my daughter never has to be admitted to St. Jude, but for all of those children who are there are in the best hands. Supporting this hospital is something that we can all do. Whether it’s $5 or $500, we can all pitch in to help save the lives of sick children. Also, be aware that during the holidays, numerous retailers including: Target, Kmart, CVS Pharmacy, and many more have products whose proceeds go directly to the hospital.

Team Spirit Tees

Although I’ve been happily living in New York for nearly a decade, I still consider myself a true blue Chicagoan! That’s why I entered Junk Food Clothing’s contest to show off my hometown’s team spirit and personal style.

The vintage T-shirt company, gifted me and 14 other bloggers, tees of our fave teams from their new NFL 2012 collection. Each blogger had to submit a photo wearing the shirt and the person with the most votes will win 5 tees (a $160 value) of our choice from the brand.

I won’t lie; I don’t know a fumble from a free-throw (OK maybe that’s a stretch), so my way of supporting sports teams is to rock a cute mascot or logo emblazoned tee.  That’s why I thought this would be a fun contest to enter.

Check out my Chicago Bears Vintage Gameday look. If you like my style, vote for me here: http://pinterest.com/junkfoodtees/nfl-blogger-love/

Thanks in advance!!

P.S Here’s a close-up of the Kandee shoes that I’m wearing in the pic.

No matter what team you’re cheering for, there’s always a cute tee to let you do it in style!

Here are a few other cool team tees:

BGG Chats w/Author K.M. Jackson

One of my fellow blogging buddies, K.M. Jackson (from Kwana Writes), has done what many of us creative types aspire to do; she wrote and published a book!

Her debut novel, Through the Lens, is a fun and sexy tale of a young woman who finally catches the eye of her object of desire. Set on a remote island, Jackson’s stellar descriptive writing style takes readers on a romantic, spellbinding journey.

I recently spoke with the New York native and chatted about her new book, the book publishing industry, and more.

Move over 50 Shades of Grey, there’s a new steamy page-turner on your New York Times best-seller tail!

K.M Jackson, author of Through the Lens

Check out the Q&A:

BGG: At what age did you realize that you wanted to write professionally?
Jackson: Growing up a city girl taking the ‘A’ train everyday to high school I had two dreams. One was to be a fashion designer and the other was to be a writer. After ten years working in the New York Fashion world I became a stay at home mother to my school age twins. It was then that I decided to pursue my other dream of being a writer. Of course the professional part didn’t come for quite a few years but it did come.

BGG: Through the Lens is such a sexy page-turner! Is romance your favorite writing genre?
Jackson: It is. I’ve always loved romance. Give me something that makes my heart flutter and I’m in. I enjoy a book with strong characters and even stronger emotion and I think the romance genre as that no matter if you go for contemporary, historical, suspense you can find that payoff in romance.

BGG: Without giving it away, is there a message in Through the Lens that you’d like readers to grasp?
Jackson: That is a tough one. I don’t like to get preachy in my books and I don’t start off with any sort of message. This being a romance I would say there is a definitely a message of true love conquering all but over that there is a message of finding strength and self worth that I hope comes through.

Through the Lens is available at Amazon, BN, and iTunes!

BGG: E-publishing is on the rise to the joy of many writers. What were your initial thoughts about it?
Jackson: Honestly, at first I was nervous. Like so many writers I had dreams of going the traditional route and being published by one of the big six or is it four or two now? Who knows? But after so many years of rejections and getting close and ‘we love your voice but just don’t know where to put you,’ I see e-publishing as a wonderful opportunity take more control of my own career and finally get my stories out there.

BGG: Prior to publishing with Crimson, did you find it difficult to not be labeled as “African-American” romance, but simply romance?
Jackson: Absolutely. I know that is cause for debate but it has always bugged me that there has been this separate but unequal thing with African-American writers or any writers of color. I believe I have had a harder time getting my books out there because my characters were not black enough. Yes, I’ve had an agent tell me this and what a horror that that is still a thing. I, clearly in his eyes, wrote books with too much diversity and he said the publisher would have a hard time knowing where to shelve my books. This to me was a heartbreaker. But I’m thrilled to now have found a publisher in Crimson who regardless of the color of the characters or more importantly the color of the author does not segregate the romance.

BGG: Who are a few of your favorite authors?
Jackson: There are too many to count and I fear if I leave some out I’ll be doing your readers a disservice. I read so many books and my favorite is the one that keeps me up and has me fibbing to my husband about the time. You know, saying it’s only midnight and it’s really 3am and I’m still up reading. Shh don’t tell!

BGG: Now that you have two more books in the works, what can readers expect?
Jackson: Thanks so much for asking. Through the Lens is the first in what I’m calling my Creative Hearts series and my publisher, Crimson Romance, has just contracted the next two in the series. These next two will be stand alone books like Through the Lens but have characters that the readers will meet in each of the preceding books. The defining thread is that the main characters all have creative jobs and come from New York. Up next is my sexy book set in the art world and then after that is a book set in the sometimes not so glam New York fashion design world. I’m so excited to bring these two out. I’m a New Yorker and have an intense love of the city so I’m thrilled to set my books here.

BGG: What advice do you have for aspiring authors who dream of getting published?
Jackson: Keep writing. It took me over ten years and countless rejections. And I’m sure there may be plenty more in the future but as they say (and yes, it is annoying) no writing is wasted writing. You do get better with every word. So keep at it. Don’t give up. Also get yourself some fantastic, loving, critique partners who know their stuff. Yes, men will do you no good in life. I’m forever grateful to my group of supportive writer friends who have helped me along the way.

Laila Ali Launches New Hair Styling Tools Line

Champion boxer, wife and mother, Laila Ali makes balancing family and business look easy!

The fab former fighter, 34, recently launched a line of styling tools with Helen of Troy (hair product empire) made with us BGs in mind.

Specifically designed for our various hair types (with a concentration on natural hair), the ceramic and titanium technology that these tools use can heat up to 450 degrees, but still leaves hair healthy and prevents breakage. The line includes a variety of hair dryers, straighteners, and specialty tools (conditioning heat cap, 3-barrel waver, etc.).

Laila Ali Styling Tools are available here, $23-$50

Since I wear my hair natural, but occasionally straightened, I’ve tried the Ionic Styler Dryer ($29.99) and absolutely love it! I use it when I want to stretch my shrinkage and wear a variety of styles. Using only a medium heating setting, it dries my hair quickly and leaves it semi-straightened and shiny!

Not only do these tools get the job done, but they’re also eye-catching! The sleek, purple design punches up the typical boring black models found with other brands.

Ali is a beautiful multi-talented woman who continues to prove that we BGs can do it all and look good while doing it!

What are some of your favorite styling tool brands?

BGG Dines w/Carol’s Daughter’s Lisa Price

Last week, I had the privilege of attending an intimate dinner with Carol’s Daughter founder, Lisa Price.

Held at the swanky French-Vietnamese restaurant, Indochine, here in New York City, fellow beauty bloggers/editors and I had a chance to dine with the natural beauty businesswoman. Over an exquisitely delicious meal, (I was obsessed with the stuffed shrimp!) we chatted and learned about new products while getting to know the incredibly down-to-earth entrepreneur.

Since I’m a huge CD fan, I was already pretty familiar with most of the products of topic, but was thrilled to learn about her new split-end preventing-product—Monoi Repairing Split End Sealer ($25). Since going natural a few years ago, I tend to suffer from split-ends, but not as much as I did when I wore my hair relaxed. Until now, I hadn’t come across a product that solely focused on combatting the annoying hair occurrence of split ends.

Monoi Repairing Split-End Sealer available here, $25

Infused with coconut oil and formulated to seal and bind ends, this product also moisturizes and conditions in an effort to maintain strong, healthy hair. I’m excited to give it a go in hopes of cutting down on occasional trims. Stay tuned for a full review!

In addition to learning about new CD products, I also got the scoop on her line of luxurious Candy Paint lip glosses. Unfortunately, if you loved them like me, you’re out of luck. She doesn’t plan on taking on the makeup arena again anytime soon.

After talking products, Price and I also chatted about the wonderful world of motherhood. She gave me great advice about  balancing work and family, which is never an easy feat!

Thanks to this lovely dinner, I can definitely attest that her personality is as warm and inviting as her products!
