Event Recap: Dark & Lovely and Everyday People Brunch

A couple of weeks ago I was invited by Dark & Lovely to attend the Everyday People brunch here in New York City.

If you’re unfamiliar with the popular brunch series, it’s held monthly at trendy The DL on the lower east side and hosted by stylish girl-about-town, Saada Ahmed and Bravo TV’s Chef Roblé.

Prior to brunch, we bloggers/editors were seated in a comfy “style suite” area of the restaurant where we learned about the haircare brand’s Au Naturale Anti-Breakagé and Au Naturalé Anti-Shrinkage lines (I love the Anti-Breakage line, but still haven’t tried the latter) from Soft-Sheen Carson’s Artistic Director Mezel Jefferson.

After we received the rundown on the various products, we were encouraged to move into the main room for a lovely brunch buffet of eggs, french toast, fried chicken, biscuits, potatoes, bacon and other yummy offerings.

It was a fun afternoon of mingling with fellow bloggers, editors and trendsetters (aka “the cool kids”) with awesome hair and eye-catching fashions. The food, networking and people watching was good, but the music made the event! I’m a true ’80’s baby, so listening to the hits of the 90s was a treat. Hearing old school Usher and Mase songs made me feel nostalgic and provided such a cool vibe. There was also a performance by R&B duo and neo-soul pioneers, Les Nubians, but I left  (mommy duties called) before their set started.

If you’re ever able to attend (not sure if it’s ticketed or invite-only since I was invited by Dark & Lovely), I highly recommend it because the mix of food, people and music makes for an unforgettable brunch!

Have you ever attended an Everyday People brunch? If not, do you get together for monthly brunch dates with your friends?

Family Fun at Brooklyn Bridge Park with Amex EveryDay Card

Last weekend, my family and I were invited by American Express EveryDay Card to enjoy an afternoon viewing party of the 2014 US Open (via jumbo screen) at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Upon our arrival, we were given super cute picnic blankets and baskets filled with a delicious lunch specially curated from renowned chef Thomas Keller provided by Bouchon Bakery. After eating and lounging on the lawn, we took my daughter to the complimentary tennis lessons for kids. She seemed to have a blast, but it’s safe to say that she will probably not be the next Serena Williams!

After the mini tennis lesson, my hubby and I resumed our relaxing afternoon noshing on grapes, viewing the US Open, and watching the kids play nearby in the grass.

Despite living in NYC for a little over 11 years, I had never made my way down to Brooklyn Bridge Park prior to last week. I’m not sure if it’s always been so nice, but if you haven’t been there lately you should definitely plan a trip before summer’s officially a distant memory. The breathtaking view alone is reason enough to go.

We had a fantastic, fun-filled family day that we’ll cherish forever.

Celebrate Grandparents Day with Edible Arrangements!

We’re all familiar with a few frivolous “Hallmark” holidays, but for me National Grandparents Day isn’t one of them.

Personally, it’s a legitimate day to reflect and cherish the memories I shared with my late grandparents, as well as honor my children’s grandparents. This Sunday (September 7) my family and I are showing our love and appreciation for my mother-in-law by sending her a delicious Edible Arrangements fruit bouquet.

Edible-Arrangements

Edible Arrangements available here, starting at $29.

A great alternative to flowers, this nutritious gift is as beautiful as it tastes. The pineapple “petals” or grape “stems” make this an eye-catching present that grandparents and families alike can enjoy. What better way to promote healthy snacking while showing your adoration? I think it’s the perfect token of love for those very special individuals.

If my grandparents were still here, I’m sure I’d send them one too!

How will you celebrate Grandparents Day on Sunday?

Back-To-School Product Review: Epson Portable Label Printer (LW-600)

The back-to-school countdown has officially begun in my home.

With only 48 hours before the start of my daughter’s first day of preschool, I’ve been busy stocking up on all of the typical school supply essentials: crayons, markers, pencils and construction paper. While those are no-brainer buys, label makers should also be included on those back-to-school lists.

Recently, I had the opportunity to review the Epson Portable Label Printer (LW-600P) and couldn’t be happier with the product. Since many students will have the same supplies, I’ve been eagerly using the label printer to personalize most of her items.

Epson-Label-Printer

Epson Portable Label Printer (LW-600) available here, $99

The handy, wireless gadget is super easy to setup and is compatible with most tech devices including: tablets, smartphones, PCs and Macs. Sometimes I can be a tech-phobe, but printing out my labels on my Android was a breeze.

Simply download the Epson iLabel app to your device  (via Bluetooth) and you’ll be able to print and customize labels effortlessly at your convenience. You can create handwritten labels and even iron-ons! The app also provides a nice selection of fonts, making designing fun. Also, I found that having the ability to review the text before printing sets this label maker apart from the old-school ones I’m familiar with. This feature saves tape and ultimately, time.

This label printer is an overall good organizational household item, but it’s especially useful for families with young school-aged children.  Remember, it’s always a good idea to label your child’s belongings to prevent unnecessary mixups and prevent theft at school. Plus, what young kid doesn’t like seeing his/her name on stuff?

Do you use labels to personalize and/or customize your child’s belongings?

Interview: Tech Entrepreneur Dez White

Many of us have a multitude of apps on our smartphones and tablets. Unfortunately, most of those mobile apps, whether gaming, social messaging or entertainment based, aren’t created by individuals who look like me and you.

It’s no surprise that widespread diversity in Silicon Valley is virtually non-existent. Thankfully, tech entrepreneur and app developer Dez White is on a mission to shift that imbalance.

Believed to be the youngest African-American female developer to invent and successfully launch a suite of apps, White, 30, is getting noticed and for good reason.

Her line of “Invisible” apps (Invisible Call, Invisible Text, Invisible Email and Invisible Social) enable consumers to communicate privately and securely across multiple platforms. Her most popular app, “Invisible Text” allows users to remotely delete messages before they’ve been read, send messages privately that disappear forever, as well as send GPS locations, video, audio files and more.

Not only does the California native stay busy developing apps to protect privacy, but she also gives back.

In an effort to pique interest in technology for young girls (over the age of 13), White is launching Girl Code LA —a series of free nationwide tech events to introduce them to app development, the funding process, and will also provide an intro to coding. The series will kick-off Sept. 6 in Los Angeles.

I recently spoke with White to talk about her developments, how she balances it all (she’s also a mom of two!) and more!

Check out our Q&A below:

BGG: What inspired you to start creating apps such as “Invisible Text?”
Dez White: When I previously worked in journalism, I saw a need for a form of communication that allowed a certain level of anonymity. I was particularly looking for a secure way to send and receive messages and realized that nothing quite like this existed on the market. There are other platforms out there that offer similar functions, but their security was and can be compromised. I also loved the idea of creating an option that would allow people to take back messages after they’ve been sent. There’s not a single one of us that hasn’t sent something we immediately regretted. Invisible Text users can remotely delete a message any time before the recipient has opened the message, and people love that.

BGG: Were you always interested in technology as a a kid and teen?
DW: I actually became fascinated by technology in my early teens. I had a friend who was a hacker and was pretty successful at it. I became really intrigued by what he was doing, what he was able to do, and it turned into a love of technology.

BGG: Who is the “Invisible Text” user? Can you describe who would be a great candidate for downloading this app?
DW: Anyone with a phone is a candidate! Business executives, moms, everyday people, and of course individuals who need to send sensitive or discreet information are the perfect audience for this app. I personally  use it to text security codes, logins, and other private information to my nanny and my husband.

BGG: I have to admit, it seems like it would be an ideal app for individuals who are doing or saying something that they probably shouldn’t be (i.e cheaters). Do you find or is there even a way to quantify that many consumers of the app use it for that purpose?
DW: I actually don’t know how it’s being used by people. We don’t keep any messages on our servers to ensure full privacy, but I can imagine (as with anything) that there are some people using it for purposes that might raise an eyebrow.

BGG: What has been your biggest challenge in the industry?
DW: There are a lot of barriers to entry. There is great progress being made to attract more women in the technology space, but being a woman, a mom, and having not come from Silicon Valley, I’ve had to work very hard to get yeses and the attention of influencers where others might have been able to do so more easily.

BGG: What key advice would you give another woman of color trying to break into the male-dominated tech industry (with a focus on developing apps)?
DW: Be patient and keep fighting. Do not take no for an answer. Strive for the top; it’s crowded at the bottom.

BGG: What’s been the best business advice you’ve ever received?
DW: When people tell you no, they are just expressing their own limitations. It has nothing to do with you. If you can dream it, it is possible. Audrey Hepburn once said “even the word impossible says I’m Possible.”

BGG: Do you have any mentors in the industry who have helped you along the way?
DW: Dan Fleyshman has been very supportive. He is actually the youngest person to take a company public.

BGG: Girl Code LA sounds like an amazing opportunity for young women of color! Tell me how it came to be.
DW: We hope so! There are just not enough women in tech today and even less women of color. And, while I’m not an expert on why that is, my own experience has been that not enough is being done to attract young girls and women into the space.

With all the recent (lack of) diversity results lately, I think it’s clear that young women don’t even realize computer sciences are an option for them. I want to change that. My own relationship with the business started because of a friendship with a guy who was really into tech, but had that friendship not existed, I can’t say definitively that I may have ended up in tech either.

I am working to create groups for women (and men can come too) that will give people an early introduction into tech, coding and fundraising in a supportive judgment-free environment. I want attendees to feel comfortable asking questions that they might otherwise feel intimidated to ask. The Girl Code is about having each others backs, and Girl Code LA aims to do the exact same thing.

BGG: I know that you’re working on “Blind Debit” with Damon Dash. Can you tell me a little of what consumers can expect?
DW: I’m really excited about this project. Essentially, people will be able to pay for things using their fingerprints instead of traditional payment methods. We believe it has the potential to enable the public to become a bigger part of the merchant services community. We are currently fundraising and have plans to launch next year.

BGG: I understand that you also have a entertainment website. How do you balance that along with your app ventures coupled with the demands of motherhood?
DW: I have a very supportive team and that makes a world of difference. My business partner currently runs the website, and I have a great nanny which helps so much. But, there is nothing more important to me than my children. So, no matter what is happening, I commit to turning work off every evening so that I can spend quality time with my boys.

BGG: What’s next for you?
DW: I’m working on a book and am launching a new music platform with Damon Dash called Rap Battle Live. Stay tuned.

Would you use “Invisible Text?” What’s the one app you can’t live without?

(Sponsored): BGG Attends Blogging While Brown Conference + AT&T ‘Inspired Mobility’ iPad Mini GIVEAWAY!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend my very first Blogging While Brown conference.

Thanks to AT&T, who sponsored my attendance, I was able to convene with fellow bloggers at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Since I’ve been blogging consistently since 2007, I’m not sure why I had never gone to the conference prior to this year. But, as the saying goes, “better late than never!”

Throughout the two-day event there were various sessions customized to address the needs of us African-American bloggers. From learning how to earn six figures as a professional blogger to the importance of building relationships with like-minded bloggers, I sat in on several informative sessions. Surprisingly, a couple of the seminars were quite interactive, which helped facilitate networking. I’m always a bit shy when introducing myself, so I felt that having attendees talk and work together was an excellent idea on behalf of the organizers. I even got the opportunity to meet media personality, Jacque Reid, whose career I’ve admired since her days at BET.

Jacque-Reid-KBP-BWBJacque Reid and I at the Blogging While Brown Conference in NYC on Saturday, June 28, 2014.

While I enjoyed hearing about effective tactics on building traffic, ways to monetize my blog, as well as how to get invited to speak at conferences, I was mostly anticipating AT&T’s panel discussion on “Inspired Mobilitya national conversation about the cultural shift in how people use mobile and Internet technology to enhance their faith experience.

As a blogging partner with the popular telecommunications company, I knew about the “ministry meets mobile” initiative, but was excited to hear their team share it publicly at the conference. Plus, I wanted to learn about the findings from the survey that AT&T conducted in collaboration with Ebony magazine on this subject. Prior to being approached by AT&T for this campaign, I honestly had never thought about how faith and mobile technology could be merged.

AT&T U.S. Diversity Corporate Communications Executive L. Michelle Smith, Technology and Social Media Director, T.D. Jakes Ministries/ AT&T consultant Jason Caston, Digital and Social Media Expert Tiffani Robinson, and Ministry Multimedia Expert Chip Dizard led the engaging discussion. They talked about how using mobile technology apps such as Twitter are a great way to share the spiritual and faith-based conversation beyond places of worship. In fact, Robinson stated that using these easy online tools could ultimately reach a generation that would probably not hear certain scriptures and inspiring words outside of social media. According to Caston, “We’re witnessing a cultural shift. Mobility allows churches to expand their reach and connect with more people.”

Pictured L to R: L. Michelle Smith, Tiffani Robinson, Chip Dizard and Jason Caston during the AT&T “Inspired Mobility” panel discussion during the Blogging While Brown conference on Saturday, June 28, 2014 in New York City.

After the discussion from the experts, the floor was open for questions from the Blogging While Brown audience. The conversation got interesting with inquiries such as the appropriate ways to use social media while in church. Caston provided a few tips during the panel discussion and he also has compiled a list of guidelines here.

Throughout the conference I interviewed a few people and asked them their opinions about the church using mobile technology. Not surprisingly, I found that all of them embraced the concept. No one really feels like using iPads and cell phones during church is taboo anymore.

Check out the clips below:

Blogging While Brown attendee, Leah of Washington, D.C., shares her thoughts on bridging the gap between mobile technology and the church.

Blogging While Brown attendee, Nancy of Brooklyn, shares her thoughts on bridging the gap between mobile technology and the church.

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend full of learning, networking and being a part of a special initiative. Thanks again to AT&T for giving me the opportunity to attend the conference and be a part of the “Inspired Mobility” campaign.

*Disclosure: I received an iPad Mini and other accessories from AT&T.
