Giving Back: The Magic Behind Disney’s Social Outreach

Walt Disney World is the place where dreams come true and magical memories are made.

For families who are experiencing hardships like a child with a terminal illness, those memories are even more precious.

During my attendance at the 2018 Disney’s Social Media Moms Celebration, a mom-centric blogger conference, I learned just how much Disney does to help bring those special moments to life. While the company doesn’t tout its philanthropic work, it’s worthy of praise.

John Breckow, director of corporate citizenship at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts speaking about the company’s philanthropic efforts.

At the conference’s general sessions, John Breckow, director of corporate citizenship at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts shared a glimpse of what goes on “behind the magic” of Disney Parks’ social outreach. During his presentation, he shared accounts of how Disney’s charitable efforts have impacted and forever changed the lives of families around the world.

While all the stories were heartwarming tearjerkers, one stood out—the story of Richie, a young man who had been embraced by the Disney family throughout his life-threatening health journey. The way in which the company made his dreams come true is nothing short of amazing. From making him a coveted cast member to arranging an enchanting dance with Princess Belle, the compassion and grace he was shown was remarkable. Even though Richie eventually lost his battle, he touched so many lives within the Disney family and beyond.

Stories like Richie’s are what make Disney the brand so many have come to love and respect—myself included. In addition to personal stories of the company’s charitable efforts, Disney works with several nonprofits like Make-A-Wish® Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Points of Light to bring a little magic to those in need.

Me adding a few finishing touches to a painting that will be part of mural donated by Disney to a local Boys & Girls Club during the 2018 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration.

In fact, Disney’s partnership with Make-A-Wish® America has granted more than 120,000 wishes since the program launched in 1981. With the help of Disney employees and Disney VoluntEARS, the company’s social outreach is expansive. From Hurricane Harvey relief efforts that raised more than $15 million to donating beautiful murals to local Boys & Girls Clubs, Disney gives back in countless ways and always with a bit of magic.

It’s not just about the fun theme parks, playful characters or other cool attractions, what matters is how people treat and help one another. I’ve always admired Disney as a company, but after attending the conference, my admiration has grown.

I’ve learned that Disney is not only a company committed to bringing joy to families globally, but also values its employees and wants to help spread pixie dust to as many people and places as possible.

When a brand that you respect pulls back the curtain and lets you inside their world, it’s a privilege that I don’t take for granted. Getting that behind-the-scenes look at the outstanding work they do to provide comfort, happiness and inspiration to families around the world is something that I’ll always cherish.

3 Easy No-Dye Easter Egg Decorating Tips

With Easter less than 48 hours away, it’s officially crunch time for those who observe the religious, springtime holiday.

Since it’s one of my favorite celebrations, prepping for the big day is sort of a big deal. From fun egg hunts to festive décor to bunny-shaped baked goods, I go all out when it comes to gearing up for the most egg-citing day of the season.

Easter-Egg-No-Dye-Decorating-DIY

While my kids love to dye eggs in pretty pastels and saturated colors, sometimes we moms may want to do something a bit more sophisticated. For example, if you’re having guests over for dinner, kiddie colors won’t cut it (unless that’s the look you’re going for). Instead, set the table with elegant, eye-catching designs that still represent the holiday, but with a more refined approach.

Evite, the popular e-commerce invitation and party planning brand has several easy DIY ideas to help elevate your Easter egg-decorating game. These  simple crafts will make your Easter gathering eggs-tra special!

The Dress Your Daughter Will Adore this Holiday Season

Nothing makes my daughter’s face light up more than a pretty dress.

Ever since she could talk, she’s proudly expressed her preference for ultra girly garments. If she could wear a frilly dress every day, she would—and let me tell you, she’s tried.

Having a daughter who loves playing dress up on a random Wednesday, I have to bring my A-game when it comes to finding dresses for special occasions, especially the holidays.

This year, I’ve outdone myself. When she saw her brand new Strasburg Children’s dress, she nearly fell to the floor with excitement. To say she was overjoyed would be an understatement. Who could blame her?

Ava-Strasburg

Ava is wearing the “Ivy” Smocked Christmas dress available here, $112.

The gorgeous handcrafted “Ivy” frock is a dress of little girls’ dreams. Made in America with 100 percent cotton, the smock-style dress is stitched with an eye-catching chevron pattern and beautiful rosebud embroidery that’s perfect for Christmas. The red satin ribbons adorned at the bottom of the puff sleeves add a dainty, yet elegant touch that my daughter absolutely loves. Plus, the sash in the back ties the entire look together, literally.

The dress’ classic design stands out from contemporary, run-of-the mill children’s frocks found in department stores, making it even more charming and undeniably unique. While it’s ideal for the holidays, it can be repurposed for Valentine’s Day or even a winter wedding.

If you know a little girl who prefers a pretty dress over the hottest toys or latest gadgets like my daughter, give her the gift that she’ll cherish: a stunning Strasburg Children’s dress. Trust me, you’ll be showered in kisses and inundated with countless twirls after presenting this timeless ensemble.

Baby Dove GIVEAWAY + Tips for Keeping Babies’ Skin in Tip-Top Shape this Winter

The official start of winter is a few days away, but falling temps make it feel like we’re already in the deep freeze.

That’s why it’s important to protect and take care of our skin—especially the delicate skin of our little ones.

When I was a first-time mom, I remember being terrified of exposing my daughter to the frigid air and brutal winds. Her already dry skin would turn bright red the minute we stepped outside and the moisture would zap immediately—leaving behind cracked, ashy skin.

In addition to bundling your bundles of joy with layers of outwear, protecting their precious skin underneath is the key to healthy, hydrated skin.

I recently caught up with Dr. Tanya Altmann, a California-based pediatrician and Baby Dove partner who offered tips on how to keep our babies’ skin healthy all season long.

baby-dove

Q: How can you best prepare your baby’s skin care routine for the colder weather?
Dr. Altmann: Cold, dry winter weather often causes dry, chapped, irritated cheeks. Cleansing with a mild wash helps prevent dryness and protects skin’s natural barrier and locks in moisture. In addition, apply a mild lotion to baby cheeks regularly, or as frequently as needed to prevent chapping.

Q: If you notice a rash on your baby’s skin, what’s best practice to figure out what it is and how to treat it?
Dr. Altmann: If you find your baby’s bottom becoming red or irritated, wash your baby’s bottom each night with a sensitive, mild moisturizing baby wash and let it air dry. Consult your pediatrician about using a diaper rash cream for a few days if the redness and irritation continues and if it worsens, see the doctor in person.

Q: What baby skin issues do you see most often flare up during the colder months of the year?
Dr. Altmann: Chapped skin, especially dry chapped cheeks.  In addition, any skin issues like eczema that anyone has can often be worse when the skin gets dried out during cold winter months due to indoor heaters and dry air.

Q: Are their issues more prevalent in babies with darker skin tones?
Dr. Altmann: Darker skin tends to show more irritation and scaring from itching, rashes, cuts and scrapes compared to lighter skin. It is also common for darker skin to lose hydration more quickly. Ensuring skin is hydrated is extremely important. Use a cleanser with ¼ cup moisturizing cream, such as Baby Dove Rich Moisture Tip to Toe Wash. This formula helps to repair the skins natural barrier for added protection. To lock-in moisture, apply Baby Dove Rich Moisture Lotion after bathing as well

Q: Are there fabrics you should avoid with babies?
Dr. Altmann: Avoid rough, non-breathable fabrics.  Dress baby in layers to avoid overheating and sweating when going indoors with heat.

How do you keep your baby’s skin in tip-top shape during the cold winter months?

The Trusted Remedy When Mom’s TLC Doesn’t Work

First it’s a sneeze, then a cough and finally once you get out the thermometer, you realize your little one is coming down with a cold—or even worse, the flu.

As a mom, especially the first time around, seeing your baby sick is the worst. You feel helpless because you’re unable to magically make them feel better. Our kisses and hugs are comforting, but unfortunately they aren’t the antidote to making them well. Thankfully, there are plenty of over-the-counter medicine to help us moms out.

Little Remedies® is a brand that I’ve sworn by since my daughter experienced her first bout with congestion. Founded by a father and a pharmacist, I trust that their products will provide gentle, yet effective relief for my children.

Their all-natural Stuffy Nose Kit was a godsend when she could barely breathe out her cute, button nose. The saline drops were easy to administer and the aspirator was simple and didn’t seem to cause her any discomfort. Plus, I didn’t have to worry about any harmful side effects due to its non-medicated formula.

Little Remedies Stuffy Nose Kit available here, $5.50

Since then, I’ve used Little Remedies® throughout the years on both of my kids. From stuffy noses to gassy tummies to mild fevers, the all-natural brand has been my go-to for those not-so-good days.

My son at the doctor's office earlier this year after suffering from an ear infection.

My son at the doctor’s office earlier this year after suffering from an ear infection.

In addition to their line of medicines, the company has recently released A Little More Wisdom, a parenting resource for caring for your baby’s health and wellness from day one. The book is a easy-to-read, comprehensive guide that outlines and simplifies commons questions that all moms have like “How can I soothe my baby?” “What are some tips for that first airplane ride?” and of course, “How can I get my baby to sleep through the night?”

As a mom of two, I still get nervous and a bit out of sorts when one of my kids gets sick. Luckily, I know there are brands like Little Remedies® that will help ease my fears and get them back up and running in no time.

What’s some of your little remedies for when your child gets sick?
