Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Coming to Disney World and Disneyland in 2024

This past weekend was one for the books. For starters, I headed down to New Orleans to attend the Essence Festival of Culture. If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing the four-day event, it’s a fun-filled weekend bursting with uplifting activities, empowering panels, and of course, concerts all created with Black women in mind. Simply put, it’s a glorious celebration for us.

That’s why it was the perfect place for Disney to explore the details around Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, one of the newest amusement ride attractions coming to Magic Kingdom in Orlando and Disneyland in California in late 2024. That’s right, our favorite Black princess (from “The Princess and the Frog”) who is fictionally based in the Big Easy is getting her own ride.

I had the honor of attending the press event at Preservation Hall — one of the city’s most historic and popular music venues — where the attraction’s name was revealed and learned some fascinating facts about its creation. In case you didn’t know, authenticity is paramount for Disney. Their Imagineers (Disney’s spin on engineers), work tirelessly and comb through painstaking details to ensure that everything they develop is rooted in authenticity.

Pictured (L-R): Ted Robledo, executive creative director at Walt Disney Imagineering and Stella Chase, daughter of the late Chef Leah Chase who inspired Tiana’s story.

From an alligator’s slithering movement to New Orleans’ unique vibe and environment, the Imagineers relentlessly researched and studied real-life in the bayou — essentially leaving no lilypad unturned. They worked closely with local experts and individuals like Stella Chase,  the daughter of the late, legendary chef Leah Chase — who was also a panelist at the event — to ensure the ride accurately depicts the setting and stays true to the city in which the movie was inspired.

Disney Park guests can look forward to seeing the next chapter of Tiana’s life as the attraction, which is a reimagining of Magic Kingdom’s Splash Mountain, takes riders on a musical journey inspired by the beloved film.

“Picking up where the film left off, guests will join Princess Tiana, Naveen and jazz-loving alligator Louis on an adventure through the bayou as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration where everyone is welcome,” Carmen Smith, Senior Vice President, Creative Development – Product/Content & Inclusive Strategies at Disney wrote in a recent Disney Park’s blog post. “Along the way, guests will encounter familiar faces, make new friends and travel through the bayou to original music inspired by songs from the film as they are brought into the next chapter of Tiana’s story.”

After learning about the details, attendees were treated to a surprise rendition of “Dig a Little Deeper,” performed by famed actor and prolific entertainer Jenifer Lewis. For the uninitiated, Lewis provided the voice of Mama Odie in “The Princess and the Frog” movie.

Overall it was an incredible event that exquisitely showcased the beauty of New Orleans coupled with the magic of Disney. My family and I can’t wait to experience Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in late 2024!

When You Wish Upon a Star: Disney Dreamers Academy 2022 Recap

Last week was nothing short of magical. I got a chance to cover and attend the Disney Dreamers Academy in Orlando, FL. Created and hosted by Walt Disney World Resort, the four-day immersive mentorship event was founded in 2008 on the premise of broadening career awareness and creating exclusive opportunities for Black high school students and teens from underrepresented communities across America.

Although the impactful program is designed to foster the dreams of 100 outstanding young leaders beyond imagination — the event also sparked big dreams for me too! I’ll save that for another post, but first, here’s a full recap of the unforgettable weekend that I’m sure will forever live in the hearts of all the Disney Dreamers.

Day 1: Dream Bigger

Walt Disney was one of the greatest dreamers to ever walk the earth. His legacy lives on throughout Walt Disney World and was truly felt during the Dreamers event. As the first class to complete the program since the start of the pandemic, the excitement and enthusiasm in the air was palpable.

The Dreamers were ready and eager to seize the day, which started at Magic Kingdom. All 100 students participated in a character cavalcade, which is a procession that marches through the park. Leading the way was Kelly Rowland, who served as this year’s celebrity ambassador and parade’s grand marshal. Drum Major Mickey was outfitted by renowned fashion designer Kerby Jean-Raymond, who was also in attendance. After media interviews and photo shoots, the students were whisked away to partake in more exclusive activities.

Later that evening, the Dreamers kicked off the weekend with a festive welcome rally that took place at Epcot’s World Showplace. Guests were treated to an uplifting performance by Kierra Sheard, who sang an uplifting gospel song that gave the audience goosebumps. The evening ended with a delicious waterfront dinner (for members of the media), an extravagant dessert party followed by a spectacular water and fireworks display at Epcot.

Day 2: Discover the Possibilities

The next morning, Dreamers were up bright and early to learn from a remarkable host of motivational guest speakers, mentors and sponsors including Caroline Wanga (CEO of ESSENCE Communications), Arturo Holmes (Getty photographer) and many more. Topics ranged from staying true to one’s self to the art of pivoting and learning new skills. Dreamers were encouraged to discover the possibilities and be fearless in their approach.

Later that afternoon, the group visited Disney University and other off-site facilities where they participated in deep dives, which provided them with a hands-on opportunity to learn from some of the best professionals in their respective fields. From journalistic arts to music production, Dreamers were given an in-depth look into a wide range of careers at the Walt Disney Company.

Following their educational deep dives, they participated in more media interviews where we got their thoughts on the experience. In the evening, all attendees were welcomed to an empowering networking dinner sponsored by Hallmark Mahogany. Throughout the dinner, students got the chance to hear from panelists including Nwaku Onwusa, Jathan Wilson, Disney’s own Tracey D. Powell, and more. Plus, they were entertained by an incredible musical performance by The Shindellas.

Day 3: Jumpstart

The next morning was all about style! Dreamers strutted their stuff and walked the runway stage donning stunning looks that complemented their personalities. Styled by iconic image makers Misa Hylton-Brim who is responsible for Mary J. Blige’s signature look and Jérome Lamaar who orchestrated Beyoncé’s Black is King ensembles. The image makeovers boosted Dreamers’ confidence and encouraged them to take pride in their appearance.

Following the fashion show, Dreamers and attendees got an informative earful from panelists such as Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar, the dream team behind Disney+’s Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, OWN’s Black Love producers, and a host of other inspiring notables.

After the insightful conversations, everyone had free time to enjoy the parks. I went to Animal Kingdom and rode two of my favorite rides: Avatar Flight of Passage and Kilimanjaro Safari.

For dinner, guests were encouraged to check out Disney Springs, which is a one-of-a-kind, themed shopping and entertainment district in the heart of Walt Disney World. I had the pleasure of dining at The Boathouse, a waterfront seafood restaurant that boasts a sophisticated ambiance.

Day 4: Commencement

The final day arrived and the Dreamers and all attendees started the morning off with a delicious breakfast. Seeing the students and their parents/chaperones was a bittersweet moment for everyone in attendance. Since it was my first time covering the Dreamers Academy event, I didn’t know what to expect when it came to the commencement. I wasn’t sure if each Dreamer’s name would be called and they’d accept a  Disney Dreamers Academy diploma or something similar. That didn’t happen, but Mickey Mouse made a special appearance (and confetti) as the parents/chaperones presented their child with a class ring. It was a special, heartwarming moment that nearly brought me to tears.

Being in the presence of such amazing young people was inspiring, empowering and encouraging. I am beyond blessed and grateful to have had the opportunity to witness the magic that only Disney can bring — while motivating Black students to dream big. It’s one of the best experiences I’ve had since I started my blog 15 years ago!

I’m so grateful to Disney for inviting me to cover and attend. Hopefully, I’ll be back again next year with even more to report!

If you have a high school student between the ages of 13-19 who would like to apply for the Disney Dreamers Academy, be sure to check the website for more information.

BGG to Cover Disney Dreamers Academy’s 15th Anniversary Celebration

Today, I embark on a magical adventure. If you’re familiar with my blog, you know whenever I mention “magical” that typically means Disney!

For the first time, I’ve been invited to cover and attend the Disney Dreamers Academy at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando, FL March 3 – 6. As someone who’s been to Disney five times in the last six years, it’s safe to say that my family and I enjoy the House of Mouse. So, you know I jumped at this amazing opportunity.

While my crew won’t be coming with me, I’m still ecstatic to cover and partake in the festivities solo. Honestly, it’s perfect so I can stay focused on the mission at hand — meeting the Disney Dreamers and their families. Unfamiliar with the program? Let me get you up to speed!

It was created 15 years ago to broaden career awareness by creating exclusive opportunities for Black students and teens from underrepresented communities across America. Each year, 100 high school students between the ages of 13-19 are selected to attend out of thousands of applicants.

This year, the impactful program will continue to foster the dreams of young leaders beyond imagination by offering a variety of workshops, networking sessions, mentorship connections, and introductions to future professional opportunities at The Walt Disney Company and beyond. What’s more, the fun-filled event will undoubtedly be pixie dusted with unimaginable magic!

Plus, to mark Disney Dreamers Academy’s 15th anniversary, the program is launching a new

initiative, in partnership with ESPN’s The Undefeated and GRAMMY-nominated rap artist Cordae, that will award college scholarships to 11 students from underrepresented communities attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Oh, and if things couldn’t get better, Grammy-award winning singer and actress Kelly Rowland will serve as this year’s celebrity ambassador.

“Mentorship is an experience I treasure, and the opportunity to invest my time into these students is incredible,” Rowland said in a release. “I’m excited to work with them and watch how they grow throughout the program.”

Rowland will share personal insights with the students, drawing from her own unique experience as a pre-teen performer then as a teenager in one of the best-selling female groups of all time, Destiny’s Child.

As a proponent of diversity, equity and inclusion, I’m thrilled to be a part of what I’m sure will be an unforgettable four days. The best part? The Disney Dreamer Academy coincides with the 15th anniversary of my blog. Being invited to cover this esteemed event as a blogger/influencer/journalist, is not lost on me. It pays to dream big — I’m a living proof!

10 Things to Do and See in San Francisco

When it comes to west coast destinations, San Francisco tops the list of must-see cities. The bustling metropolis is 400 miles north of warm and sunny Los Angeles, but is just as enticing as the City of Angels.

With countless dining options, cultural attractions, sprawling parks and outdoor spaces, San Francisco is more than a tech hub. Sure, it’s home to all our favorite app and digital companies like Facebook and Twitter, but the Bay Area has so much more to offer.

Whether you’re in the mood to shop, sightsee or indulge in a bit of rest and relaxation, San Fran has you covered.

Read on to learn more about my first trip and top picks for visiting the Golden Gate City.

Walt Disney Family Museum
Ever since attending Disney’s Social Media Celebrations a few years ago, I’ve become obsessed with the House of Mouse. So, getting a peek inside the creative mastermind behind one of the world’s most prolific brands was nothing short of amazing. With priceless Disney artifacts, early sketches and tons of personal memorabilia, the 40,000-sq-ft museum is teeming with rich history. If you’re a true Disney fan, learning about the man responsible for bringing unprecedented magic to so many lives is a stop you can’t miss.

Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD)
Who doesn’t enjoy museums? They’re always chock-full of exhibits with interesting relics and captivating nuggets that make you stop, think and reflect. The Museum of the African Diaspora is no different. As an avid lover of African-American history, this gem puts Black art on full display. With shows that speak to our culture in America and beyond, the museum is a true testament to our talent and unyielding perseverance. During my visit, I checked out famous paintings, intriguing sculptures and walked away with a wealth of newfound knowledge.

Onsen Bath & Restaurant
After a nearly 6-hour cross-country flight, I was ready to unwind upon my arrival. My first stop after settling into my hotel was taking a dip at Onsen, a hidden Japanese bathing house/restaurant. Unfamiliar with onsens? Don’t worry, I was too. Basically, the word describes hot springs in Japan, but also lends itself to bathing facilities. In this case, it’s essentially a communal hot tub, ideal for decompressing. This particular onsen also has a sauna and steam room, which was a pleasant surprise. Plus, it also offers relaxing treatments and soothing massages to melt your stress away. While I didn’t indulge in dining, the restaurant portion of the space serves a wide range of Japanese favorites.

Didn’t pack enough clothes for frolicking around San Fran? Don’t fret, Union Square is the answer to all your fashion needs. Plus, there are tons of street performances to keep you entertained in between your shopping spree.

Steph Curry might be the king of the basketball court, but his wife Ayesha Curry is the queen of the kitchen. The 30-year-old entrepreneur is co-partner of one of San Francisco’s hottest restaurants, International Smoke. Serving up American fare infused with ahem, smoke, the hotspot is located in the heart of downtown. With dishes like cedar-smoked salmon and of course irresistible barbecue, patrons will come hungry and leave happy. Be sure to order the signature cornbread appetizer (thank me later).

Fisherman’s Wharf is one of San Francisco’s most quintessential sights. And, for good reason. The waterfront locale is replete with delicious street vendor bites, souvenir stores, and even a dazzling carousel. It’s the perfect place to eat, shop and see. Plus, history buffs can get a glimpse of the infamous Alcatraz Island, which formerly housed military and federal prisons.

Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory
When it comes to satisfying my sweet tooth, fortune cookies are my fave. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always enjoyed the crispy, wafer-like cookies after a Chinese meal (and without a Chinese meal). That’s why I had to make my way to the famous Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. Located in the city’s Chinatown area, the unassuming factory is tucked away in an alleyway that’s easy to pass up if you’re not paying attention. Once inside, you won’t need a fortune to predict the delight. Visitors can watch fresh cookies being made and even sample different flavors. And of course, you can purchase some for the road.

Everywhere you look, everywhere you look… (singing)
If you’re not familiar with “Full House,” then stop reading. Ok, keep reading, but if you’re not feeling nostalgic after singing that catchy theme song in your head, we can’t be friends. If you’re like most Americans and recall the popular ‘80s/‘90s sitcom, chances are you’ll recognize the Painted Ladies. While the name may not ring a bell, that’s what the pastel-colored, Victorian and Edwardian houses during the show’s opening credits are called. With a trek to Alamo Square, you can get an up-close-and-personal look at the park and pretty homes the Tanners gleefully picnicked in front of.

Retro Trolley Rides
No trip to San Francisco is complete without a ride on the iconic trolleys. Skip traffic and hop on one of these old-fashioned cable cars to reach your destination in a practical, yet retro style. Invented nearly 150 years, this unique transit system makes commuting fun and harkens back to simpler, less hectic times. Plus, with fares under $8 bucks, it’s a cost-effective and energy-efficient way to ride.

Golden Gate Bridge
Nothing says San Francisco quite like the Golden Gate Bridge. The reddish (which is actually orange) structure is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Spanning 4,200 feet, the famous bridge connects the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Be sure to grab your phone or camera to snap #obligatory selfies with the beloved landmark in the background. Trust me, after a trip to SF, no social media feed is complete without this timeless shot.

Walt Disney World’s Toy Story Land: What to Expect

Calling all Disney fans!

In case you didn’t hear, Toy Story Land is coming to the Walt Disney World Resort this summer with the official opening date of June 30, 2018.

I got a sneak preview of the playtime paradise right here in New York City and let me tell you, it’s going to be magnificent—but that’s no surprise because Disney always delivers.

toy-story-land

Inspired by the blockbuster Disney•Pixar’s franchise, the all-new 11-acre fun-filled world is located within the already magical attraction of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. With two new rides and one that’s been updated, guests will be fully immersed in thrilling entertainment surrounded by vibrant, nostalgic toy novelties. Plus, there’s a whimsical spot to grab on-the-go refreshments when hungry strikes.

Below, check out the details on what’s in store at Toy Story Land:

Slinky Dog Dash Rollercoaster
My son is obsessed with Slinky Dog. Right now, he has four slinky dog toys of different varieties, but one can never have too many Slinky Dogs, right? Well, there’s only one Slinky Dog you’ll want when visiting Toy Story Land and that’s the family-friendly roller coaster.

With tracks and supports in bright primary colors, riders are seated inside the belly coils of the stretched-out pooch. Riders will zip around and above Toy Story Land, providing panoramic views of all that the new destination has to offer. I had the pleasure of taking a virtual ride on this coaster and it was completely exhilarating.

No theme park is complete without getting bumper to bumper and Toy Story Land is no different. Riders will be in for an out-of-this world experience as the alien-inspired saucers glide riders into a fun-filled galaxy.

The galactic space toy is designed as a playset that Andy won at the Pizza Planet restaurant in the popular movie. The undeniably cute green aliens swirl about in their flying saucers with guests in tow in their rocket-ship toys, while “The Claw” hangs overhead. Plus, the space is covered, which provides shelter from the beaming sun or intermittent rain showers that are common for Orlando summers.

One of my family’s favorite attractions at Magic Kingdom, Toy Story Mania!, is getting an update making it better than ever. With a brand new decked-out entrance, the ride will have an all-new colorful toy carnival game box that leads to the play set action. With an additional third track, more park-goers will be able to get in on the fun of the beloved fast-paced games with a reduced wait time.

The food spot will also feature Mini Babybel – the Official Snack Cheese of Walt Disney World Resort.

If you’re heading to Walt Disney World before the big opening, don’t fret you’ll be able to catch a preview of the new land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A detailed model is on display at the theme park’s Walt Disney Presents attraction.
