See Cities Like Never Before with Go City Explorer Pass

When I moved to New York City way back in 2003, I never thought I’d still live here 16 years later. After becoming a mom, I made it my mission to show my two children as many of the city’s top sights and cultural attractions that the Big Apple has to offer.

Throughout the years, I’ve taken them to quintessential places around the city like Ellis Island, the American Museum of Natural History and a host of others, but there were three iconic spots we’d yet to visit: the Empire State Building, Luna Park during Halloween Harvest and the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center.

That all changed when we got the opportunity to check out the Go City New York Explorer pass. The super cost-effective pass gives tourists and locals alike, the keys to more than 20 cities including New York, Dubai, Chicago, Las Vegas, Sydney and New Orleans. With seemingly limitless possibilities at your fingertips, you can choose packages for 3, 4, 5, 7, or 10 attractions. Plus, it’s super easy and can be downloaded straight to your smartphone. The best part? You can visit any of the attractions at your leisure within 30 days after the first attraction has been activated. This alleviates the pressure of trying to squeeze everything into one day.

Our visit to the Empire State Building using the Go City Explorer pass in New York City.

With the New York City pass, those interested in seeing the Empire State Building have an incredible bonus on Tuesdays and Thursdays: exclusive early access before it opens to the public! We experienced this remarkable perk and we couldn’t have been more pleased. No crowds and no hustle and bustle so we could enjoy our time and take it all in virtually uninterrupted. I’ll never forget my kids’ excitement when we finally arrived at the top. It was a priceless moment that I won’t soon forget.

We also had the chance to visit Luna Park at Coney Island for our first visit during Harvest Fest. Having access to 24 unlimited rides was a dream come true. They rode their favorite rollercoasters, swings and rides over and over again. We’ve gone to Coney Island plenty of times in the past, but our Go City pass provided a once-in-a-lifetime experience that my kids were so grateful to have.

Finally, within 30 days of our first pass activation, we made our way to the Top of the Rock. While the pass didn’t provide early access like the Empire State Building, it did have one major advantage: breathtaking views of the Empire State Building!

Don’t Wait Until ‘Pigs Fly’ to Plan a Family Game Night

Before there were video games, there were board games.

For centuries, playing games has been a fun bonding experience for families around the globe.

Sure, video games garner a lot of attention with their incredible graphics and action-packed themes, but they’re no match for gathering with family over a good, old-fashioned interactive game.

In fact, my kids can’t get enough of the new Flying Pigs game by Cra-Z-Art. As little plastic pigs whirl around a clear, motorized globe, players try to help the farmer get his piggies back to the barn. By using colorful wands, players try to catch as many flying pigs as they can.

The Flying Pigs game is suitable for children ages 4+ and is available here, for $20.

Not only is the game fun for the whole family, it also helps with hand-eye coordination for young children who are still mastering those skills. While catching plenty of piggies is the name of the game, don’t catch the white one! If you do, all your piggies get placed back into the globe putting you in a not-so-good position. The player with the most piggies/points at the end is the winner!

My son absolutely loves this game. He’s got this piggy catching thing down pat! As a parent, it’s such a pleasure watching my kids enjoy the simple things in life. With all the tablets, gadgets and digital technology that bombard children today, it’s refreshing to just go back to the basics.

This non-tech game is a prime of example of  classic fun that creates lasting memories for the entire family. Oh, and who ever said pigs don’t fly?

What is your family’s favorite board game? How often do you plan game nights?

‘Dog Man’ Book Series is Being Developed into a Musical

Ever heard of a half-dog, half-policeman? I hadn’t neither. That’s until my 9-year-old daughter became obsessed with the Dog Man comic book last year.

Now, the best-selling series about a part-dog, part-policeman is being developed into a stage production. “Dog Man: The Musical” is slated to open this summer in partnership with TheaterWorks USA.

Created by Dav Pilkey, the mind behind Captain Underpants, the book centers around a crime-fighting dog who enjoys taking a bite out of furniture in his spare time. Pretty wacky, right? Well, the series has sold more than 23 million copies and children and critics alike are major fans. The musical adaptation will be just as fascinating as the series and take theatergoers on an adventurous ride sure to satisfy their wacky fervor for the crime-fighting canine. It beings performances at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City June 28th and runs through August 4, 2019.

Dog-Man-the-Musical

The show is written by Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander, veteran children’s programming collaborators who’ve worked on PBS’s “Peg + Cat” and the upcoming “Clifford The Big Read Dog” on PBS and Amazon.

If your kids are Dog Man fans, they’re in for a treat when the heroic character comes to life on stage. And, even if they’re not, they will be after this TheaterWorks USA production.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.

Big Apple Circus Brings Jaw-Dropping Fun to New York City

Nothing brings out the kid in all of us like the circus!

At least that was the case for me when I took my children to the Big Apple Circus last week. To say we had a blast would be an understatement. The quintessential New York staple is an experience like no other. I felt like a kid filled with excitement and awe as I watched the lively, 90-minute show.

From awe-inspiring trapeze stunts to ponies gleefully galloping around the dirt-filled ring (don’t worry, the circus is known for their humane treatment of animals), the high-energy show is jam-packed with mesmerizing performances and tricks for all to enjoy.

And the best thing of all is that every seat in the house is awesome. For more than 40 years, the circus provides an unmatched level of intimacy that makes it such a treasure and tourist attraction for families. Seeing the glittering costumes and delightful animals up close and personal adds a thrilling layer of excitement that’s hard to top.

Located near Lincoln Center under a big top tent, the 10-act circus not only features death-defying feats for eyes, it also boasts some of the best nostalgic refreshments and delicious bites for your taste buds. With fresh-popped popcorn and billowy, organic cotton candy made from pure sugarcane, the mouthwatering snacks are the cherry on top of a fun-filled circus outing. Plus, parents can enjoy refreshing signature cocktails to ensure a lively time.

TopView Sightseeing Review: Touring New York City from the Top

This past Memorial Day Weekend was one to remember.

My family visited from out of town like they normally do for the holiday, but this time it was extra special.

Thanks to TopView Sightseeing, my mom, sister and niece joined me and my two children on an unforgettable multi-day bus tour of New York City.

topview-nyc-tours-memorial-day

The hop on hop off sightseeing company boasts a large fleet of double-decker buses for tourists and locals alike to experience an adventurous ride through the Big Apple via five different routes: Downtown, Uptown, Brooklyn, the Bronx and a Night Tour.

I was excited to learn all about my second home and the birthplace of my children.

topview-sightseeing-tour

When we boarded our bus, which was conveniently located in the Theater District just steps from Times Square, we were greeted with a super friendly driver who promised to make our Downtown Tour as fun and informative as possible.

As soon as we entered, we grabbed our complimentary headphones and headed upstairs. The weather was picture-perfect so what better way to experience the journey through the city that never sleeps than to see it from the top view of course!

topview-sightseeing-tours-nyc

As we made our way to the upper deck, we were pleasantly surprised to find a row with five seats, ideal for our large group. I chose to sit in front so I’d have ample space to take pictures of their reactions to the sights.

Once we settled into our seats, we plugged in our headphones. Immediately, our ears were treated to the sweet sounds of New York City-inspired tunes. From Frank Sinatra’s classic ode to Gotham City to Brooklyn-born Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind,” quintessential New York City songs were the perfect soundtrack for our thrilling excursion.

After the pristine bus pulled off from our starting point, the impressive GPS-triggered audio got underway. Think of it as ‘Siri’ or ‘Alexa’ guiding you through the city, but with a friendlier, more personable voice. Interesting and sometimes surprising facts about the Big Apple were sprinkled throughout—all available in eight languages. Tidbits ranging from how Times Square got its name to celebrity residences, the tour was chock-full of information.

As the bus made its way through the marquee-lined streets, my son was so excited and even exclaimed that the drive was like a ride at Disney World. His eyes beamed as he took in all the magnificent sights.

times-square-topview-tours-sightseeing

We made our way through the vibrant scene of Times Square — the crossroads of the world— all the way down to Chinatown and back up again—seeing some of the city’s most iconic sights along the way. In fact, we hopped the bus off to explore the popular Chelsea Market near the High Line stop. My family and I didn’t want the nearly two-hour tour to end. It was enjoyable from start to finish.

topview-nyc-tours

Unfortunately, the next day was a total wash-out with seemingly endless rainstorms so we stayed home the following day. But the chillier air and gusty winds didn’t keep us in for long. On Monday, we decided to go on the Uptown Tour to get a glimpse of Central Park, Harlem and Museum Row—but due to the blustery weather, we opted to stay downstairs in the enclosed portion of the bus.

apollo-theater-topview-sightseeing

For my mom, seeing the legendary Apollo Theater was a major highlight. Although she’s visited the city many times throughout the years, she had never gone to Harlem. My sister and niece were mesmerized by the Guggenheim Museum’s eye-catching architecture while I was excited to see parts of Columbia University. Even though I’ve lived here for years, it was the first time I saw parts of the Ivy League campus.

As the Uptown Tour began to wind down, we all got a bit sad that our ticket to the sights of New York City was expiring soon. We knew that what we experienced was priceless and would live on in our memories. As a Windy City transplant of 15 years, I thought I’d seen most of the city, but this bus tour allowed me to see it through an entirely new lens.

topview-tours-nyc-sightseeing

Both days were filled with unmatched energy, education and entertainment. The trip exceeded my expectations and I hope to one day take the Bronx and the night tour. After these memorable excursions, I encourage all New York tourists, locals and natives to get out and see the Empire City like never before!
